My DL during DL+ time were terrible. I might as well be on a 512k line with this performance (am on 6 meg)
12: 344 megs
1: 228 megs
2: 297
3: 243
4. 584

If I look at net limiter one sees sporadic spikes but for most of the time DL is pretty poor.

Maybe WA has made their news server really slow - I find it hard to believe they still have not got it sorted out :(

I used it for half an hour this morning and it flew at 600 k.

I think what annoys me is that in SA we pay a premium for internet etc and now I need to pay more so that I can get decent DL's because WA's news server has become really sub par (I know it is a best effort service).
 
I don't think it is fair to expect free news server access to perform on par with a paid news server. If it was all that easy and cheap to provide a news server for free, then paid news servers would not have had a market to sell their service to. From my experience, if you want constant full speed DL from a news server, your ONLY option is to go the paid subscription route. I have had a subscription with Supernews for quite some time now, and it simply works brilliantly all the time, no issues ever. Well worth the +- R90/month. Coupled with my RedAfrica account, it works a treat.

eish i only moved to wa for the better news server :(

even with the not so good performance on the wa news server, i still get more then what i got with mweb , so its ok for now, but was hoping the performance comes back, it was good till the 14th or so

I think your throughput will very much depend on how many peeps are using it at a given moment. More peeps = slower speeds, understandable I think for a free service. This is the advantage of a paid service, guaranteed speeds 24/7, regardless of how many peeps are using it at a given time.

PS: When I was still on MWEB shaped uncapped, DL from paid news server was just as useless as using a free server. Their unshaped uncapped was brilliant, but just too expensive for me. Fortunately RedAfrica came to the rescue, and is a good compromise...although some more cap would be nice to have though :twisted:

I've lighted some fire on this side, which will hopefully see a permanent fix for the news server!

I switched over to Astraweb for 1/2 in DL+ time and it flew.

MFour you do raise some fair points on a free service. I do think though that for WA it has been a selling point. Oh I do totally agree that a few more gigs would be nice on those special accounts :)

Update is on it's way guys.
Sorry, I got stuck in a 3 hour meeting yesterday and haven't managed to get the proper sign-off stuff from the guys busy with the news server.

Will hopefully have some good news for Friday :)
