Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

From Web Africa

Usage Management:
We use a 2 tiered rolling window system between 6am and 12am to ensure our network is optimised to keep our customers’ accounts running smoothly.
If a User uses more than a certain amount of Gigs in a 6 hour period, then their service will be moved to a lower priority until those 6 hours are up. Their ADSL account will then be restored to normal priority.
Similarly, if a User uses more than a certain amount of Gigs in a 7 day period, then their service will be moved to a lower priority until that 7 day period is up. Their ADSL account will then be restored to normal priority.

does anyone know what those thresholds are?

We estimate that deprioritised users will experience the following speeds, depending on network traffic:

50% of their normal speed during business hours
80% of their normal speed between 5pm and 10pm
100% of their normal speed between 10pm and 7am, including the whole weekend

That is pretty sad since no matter what kind of traffic is being used [p2p,ftp,http,email] your total speed gets reduced. This is kinda sad. Why not just shape p2p traffic and leave http traffic unshaped cause if you are throttled youtube in hd becomes a headache even for a 4mb user. Sometimes browsing and streaming a http steam even causes buffering. That said one would expect a better speed than that considering paying a hefty R599 a month.

Webafrica throttles speed where mweb actually by the looks of it shape different types of traffic and leaves http fast.

Personally, I'd be happy if WebAfrica shaped or blocked all "illegitimate" traffic to Hell (news servers, torrents, etc) if it meant that browsing, latency, legitimate downloads, video streaming, VOIP, etc was 100% flawless and the same as unshaped bandwidth.

Unfortunately, I guess there's no perfect solution for everyone.

Yes agree in a sense. Its kinda unfair to think that you downloading a ubuntu iso gets the same speed as some one downloading a pirated movie vis p2p or usenet.

Both will get the same speed if they are throttled.

Just for interest sake what makes me even more sad is that, You download a http file -linux iso for example- and you are in the throttled pool you will get +- 250kbs during business hours. If some 1 else downloads a movie via p2p or usenet and he is not in the throttled pool he will most likely get full speed.

throttling is not always the best way to manage uncapped. Just saying. One would think downloaders should always come after http no matter the usage....

I would say so...

I have done upwards of 60gb from the 7th of the month. Thats with gaming, downloads, streaming and browsing. Ping has been 7ms most of the time and i have only been throttled once when downloading lol for a friend to play a match.

So far so goooooood:D

I really don't see how "what" you download has to do with anything. It quite clearly is about the amount of usage, and not what you use it for. From comments here the logic follows that "if I download legal stuff I should never be restricted, regardless the amount", but "if you download illegal stuff you should be throttled into non-existence".

If I pay for a service, I am entitled to use it.

Agree with this

It's not about the legitimacy of it, but the fact that torrents, news servers are generally left to run 24/7 and suck bandwidth up like there's no tomorrow.

In an ideal world I'd agree with you completely but unfortunately those services impact everyone else's quality, throttled or not.

News servers to a far lesser extent. There are minimal uploads :p

Hi all,

Quick question... How often do you get throttled? How often does WA run out of capacity?
Also at what times do you generally get throttled etc?

Thinking about getting ADSL again and joining.

Thanks

normally business hours, when i am at work, afterhours seems to fly, but today and yesterday it was stable during the day also.

09:00 - 10:00 1 287 589 509 bytes 1.20 GB
10:00 - 11:00 1 333 661 555 bytes 1.24 GB
11:00 - 12:00 1 285 499 923 bytes 1.20 GB
12:00 - 13:00 1 226 991 374 bytes 1.14 GB
13:00 - 14:00 1 297 656 053 bytes 1.21 GB
14:00 - 15:00 1 167 219 520 bytes 1.09 GB
15:00 - 16:00 1 155 131 503 bytes 1.08 GB
16:00 - 17:00 1 113 013 980 bytes 1.04 GB

I see, so on average its just during business hours when your speeds are throttled and most of us are at work anyways.

So after 5PM you generally end up with full line speed or near full line speed again? :)

What are some of the issues you have with WA?

my Bf3 disconnects sometimes, did not have that before, maybe just bf3, normally i get you been disconnected from ea online.

My LOL buffers , stuff happens for 5 sec, then nothing happens , then happens all the same time.

Wow works fine, tera online also, just that 2 games so far.

Youtube is tad slow sometimes.

about it, issues is sometimes not always .

Hmm, nothing that would really affect me all that much. BF3 and YouTube is a bit meh but I can live with it I guess.

Quick question, it seems WA have their own news servers (or is it the IS / SAIX server?). Is it worth while getting your own premium usenet account? I will be getting a 1Mbit line...

Let me jump in here.

The WA news server is generally excellent; they have had issues over the last few weeks but things seem to be good at present (have not used too much in the last week or two). I have an astraweb back up, but most of my down loads have been with WA news server (I think retention is 200 odds days - open to correction). For me this news server is a big plus and generally works great.

Ya wa news server had problems, i did not test again , after they installed the new server, running news deamon atm.

@Jeff The NS addresses are pointing at different IPs again (WA vs webafrica)...not sure whether its intentional this time though w/ the test NS.

@Fulton I think its 140. Or maybe 240...not sure...something *40.

Alright, so the WA news server is pretty good. Not really much of a need to get a premium account, awesome! So the speeds are generally full, even if the content is not cached?

I am assuming it still contributes towards your normal cap and not the DL+ ?
