We peer with DSTV in both CPT and JHB (total of 4 paths for their traffic to reach us) and their traffic seems to be originating on net, so shouldn’t run out of another cache like Akamai- unless there’s an issue on their network…

That said, @JOEY_8, you’re in KZN if I remember?

Any chance you can check resource monitor to see what IP you’re getting the stream from?
They use Akamai to distribute the live feeds which are done through the peering on mweb (optinet) network. The DStv services if not mistaken use their open ips.

This is an IP of a feed for supersport right now 197.84.130.33, reverse DNS it's on mweb, which is part of the Akamai cache up range for r-live-cache.akamaized.net

You're right, I just checked this again, ran a stream from a server in Isando and picked up Optinet/Mweb addresses serving content. We peer with Optinet on NAP and DINX in KZN, and not seeing any issues there. Going to try steer their traffic onto an alternate peering interface to see if they're not perhaps struggling with a congested port in KZN. Seen it before with their JINX port and Warzone servers.

More thank likely port saturation on optinets side. Have seen this many times. Not able to check the port rates at the moment but in CPT they struggle often on major events.

I'd wager you're right- seems they're delivering their content via a 1G NAP port in KZN (according to peeringdb). I'm going to steer this towards their DINX fabric for now. @JOEY_8 Please monitor and let me know if you see an improvement. Else we'll drain advertisements to them in KZN altogether until they upgrade capacity and pick this up in JHB.

Thanks for the Akamai advice!

Hi guys. Here is an update from me regarding DSTV Now :)

It still seems to be buffering for a second or so very randomly and the quality fluctuates. Seems to be happening only in the evening. I am noticing this only for the past few days since I am watching the IPL, UCL and Europa League during this time.

I have used Resource Monitor as requested. Not sure if I did it correctly. Hope it helps. I am on Vumatel Trenched in KZN.

websquadza - not sure if it’s just me but I seem to have stopped getting emails from Accounts when an invoice is generated. Have to go to the portal to find the invoice. Not too important I guess, just a heads up, was super easy to forget to make payment this month.

Thanks for the update. We're going to try drain Optinet entirely in the KZN region and see if that improves matters at all.

Can somebody in Cape Town with a gigabit link run some tests to these servers and see if they see similar speeds?

View attachment 1054987

Still trying to diagnose the slow speeds to Joburg. Steam download speeds have improved in the past weeks but it's still not where I expect it to be. It really feels like we're not quite ready for gigabit and I don't know if this is a ISP specific thing or a separate backhaul thing. The only way for me to determine that would be to test with a different ISP but that's not exactly easy.

I expect to see higher latency links have worse speeds than low latency links but that's not at all what I'm seeing, CPT to JHB is only ~20ms yet the speeds to Amsterdam and London are faster or on par with these at ~150ms. It just doesn't make sense.

A bit late to reply, but here you go:

Thanks! Is this on Octotel?
Sorry for the second reply.

In your post requesting results from a gigabit line, you mention this:

Before I moved to Websquad, I had been on both Webafrica's 300/100 (which was 1000/100 in actuality, they do not throttle the line) and Bitco's 1000/100 (which routes through JHB). On both those providers I hit 900+ mbit to Johannesburg.

@websquadza bit miffed to find out the callcentre is closed by 17h20? Even though your advertised times are 08h00-18h00? Whaddup with that?
