Evening, apologies for the delayed response. I see this was restored earlier this morning? We didn't receive an outage notice, but they were aware of the issue when escalated.
Definately not restored, 5 Openserve vans at the cable break the whole day. Reports say they were still there 21h00 (15mins ago) Cable thieves mistook it for a copper cable. Many fiber pairs to splice

From Octotel FB:

Dear Octotel clients,

Our backhaul provider is conducting maintenance on the backhaul to Rondebosch node which will impact services in the Rondebosch area. During this time, customers in the Rondebosch area will experience intermittent connectivity.

Date: 12 November 2021
Time: 04:00am
Duration: 30 minutes
Maintenance window: 1 hour

If you lose connectivity between the maintenance window it is the result of the scheduled maintenance.

Our Engineers will be on site to ensure down time is kept to an absolute minimum. During this time customers may experience intermittent to no connectivity.

@websquadza Could I ask you to please close ticket #129685? My issue has been resolved and the ticket can be closed but there has been no response to the ticket for about 2 weeks.

@websquadza do you think the new transit will be in place before the end of the year?

It’s already routing some inbound traffic based on communities we’ve chosen. No outbound routes being preferred for now as we’re still working on that. You’re not going to see any substantial changes because this path is to Paris and onwards only. We can’t use it as a primary to London as the consensus here was a direct London path (which we already have), and it won’t influence Asia. But it does provide slightly better latency to central EU when forward paths are used and we will slowly introduce these.

Ah ok - I have a cost-effective solution for gaming latencies, so that's a lesser concern. I'm mainly interested to know if I can un-throttle my NNTP downloads without getting blackholed?

So I just let NNTP run wild and learned 2 things:

1) The backhaul upgrades Octotel did last night definitely seem significant. I just hit 80MB/sec on a download and I wasn't even cranking the connections to max.
2) I'm still getting black-holed and having to spend ~5 mins without international access when fully utilising my line.

@websquadza - I'd really like to know if / when this will be resolved. It has been many, many months now since first encountering the issue, downgrading because of it, upgrading again and still being limited. If a resolution is not on the cards, I'd also like to know so I can reluctantly start looking elsewhere.

I'm glad to hear Octotel fixed something. Oddly, their backhaul into Teraco Rondebosch, from Rondebosch, is and has always been their own as far as I know, so I wonder what changed.

Have you tried dropping the number of connections now that the line is causing fewer issues which required a higher number of threads? The more connections on NNTP, the smaller the TCP packet size, and the more packets that are pushed, and our protection only cares about this number. NNTP was designed when lines were in the kbps and multithreading connections was necessary. The issue here, I checked the logs, you reached a really high PPS before triggering blackhole. For the safety of our network, I'd prefer not to share stats here and rather privately. Remember, we are not throttling - we don't care what protocol you are using, or how much of it you are using, we are not restricting what you can access. It generally takes about 15-20k 1500 byte TCP pps to fully saturate a 1G line fully and should be achievable for you. So our protection kicks in (on all TCP traffic) at multiples of this; this allows our clients to saturate a 1G link while protecting for TCP anomalies which may adversely affect our whole client base.

Connection still messed up. Checking the local forums seems to just be my connection.

Who do I need to push on ISP or vumatel?

Gah, that's not good news. I've logged a ticket but could not attach the ping plotter images or even the ping plotter text breakdown.

The team have already escalated this to Vumatel. Updates to follow on your ticket tomorrow (when Vuma responds).
