Weight loss

If you're on a low fat diet to control cholesterol, chances are switching to a high fat low carb diet will result in your cholesterol numbers improving radically. So much so your doc will drop his stethescope.

Ok thanks. Was just wondering...

Just do not do high fat high carb. That will kill you

Hi guys,

I have started going to gym now, its been my second day so far (I made the decision of starting on Sunday). My goal is to lose weight, the time frame that I want to lose weight is within 1 and a half - 2 years (not sure if that is realistic enough). I spend just over an hour at gym everyday, doing the cycling, treadmill, lifting some weights, rowing.

What I do know is that for one to lose weight effectively, you also gotta be eating right, you gotta be burning more calories than what you take in (my short 10 mins of googling). I know I could just google what foods I should be taking in to complement my training, but I would like to know from you guys what foods should I be eating? So far, I eat alot of fruit (apple's and banana's), eggs (not more than 3 eggs in a week), meat (chicken and sausage - maybe once every 2 weeks). I have stopped drinking any cooldrink, just been drinking a lot of water daily and if i need to, a maximum of 1 cup of coffee a day. I also do walks around where i stay (I think 6 / 7km walk).

Kast time I weighed myself, I was about 126kg (think this was about 3 months ago), now I am 118,75kg, and I would like to keep going down in weight, preferrebly 80 - 70kg, and I am 1.83m in height. And no, I am not taking any supplements or roids or any of that.

Please help me with foods I should/should not be taking. Any help will be greatly appreciated! :D

SHORT SIMPLIFIED VERSION: I just started gym, I would like to know what foods should I or shouldn't I be taking to complement my work.

OMB, Sinbad and others have mentioned a lot of the science behind some foods and lifestyle choices, best to wade through the thread.
Regardless of the science, it will boil down to will power and your own self motivation. Losing weight and then maintaining that weight is damn difficult.

Anyhow with regards to what to eat and what you are eating, I would cut back on the fruit. Yeh fruit is healthy but still a huge sugar intake, OMB will cringe but I would say stick to the apple but drop the bananas. I have a Grape fruit a day and an apple on occasion. Berrys are supposedly good fruits.

You can have more than 3 eggs a week, If you worried about the cholesterol (conflicting studies as usual) have a 3 egg white/1 yolk omelette. Now that I have cut out carbs almost completely and don't eat cereals, I have eggs every second day for breakfast.

So cut out all obvious carbs (breads, pasta, rice), up your meat and fish intake for your proteins, don't worry about the fat on the meat, it is actually good for you (IF you not eating carbs). Drop you sugar, and look out for hidden sugars in foods - be anal and read the labels. I try not to eat anything with a sugar content higher than 5gr per 100gr.

Snack on nuts (Not peanuts) and biltong.

OMB will tell you the science is to change the way your body burns energy, so as you have starved your body from carbs it will change to burn fat as its major fuel source.

I don't go crazy with the fats, but I have lots of avocado (very cheap at the moment) and cream cheese with my breakfast, lunch is usually a hamburger patty with cheese and lettuce or a salad, no roll, and supper would be some form of low carb meal, meat (woolies steaks on special, grab a few) with sides of spinach, beans, cauliflower etc.

I also exercise around 8 times a week, try add swimming to your gym repertoire, it is the best all round exercise, and if you swim at night you will sleep like a baby. When I first started swimming in March (132kg) I barely managed 8 laps, with long intervals between them, now anywhere between 40 -60 laps a session.

Weight loss at the moment following sinbads and OMB low carb style is around a steady 1.5kg plus a week. I realise it will slow down, but will push through and get over the plateau when it happens.

Sorry if post is a tad long.....

I'm not interested in how much to ensure ketosis, I'm interested in how much Sinbad and OMB eat. Thanks for reply though

I do not count anything. I just avoid what I know are my main craving or blood sugar triggers.

I would guess if you counted my glycaemic carbs they'd be between 10 and 40 a day. I aim to remain in ketosis.

Do you guys aim for a ketogenic state? How many carbs do you usually take in per day

I don't specifically aim for a ketogenic state although I probably am ketogenic. I do manage my carbs as best I can given how all pervasive they are (and the fact that the rest of my family eats carbs, so supper time is a juggle between my needs and keeping everyone else happy :D) I aim for between 30/40g per day max

So can I ask something... For the high fat supporters - would it be advisable for someone to just see a healthcare practitioner before embarking on a high fat diet? As in, could it have implications for someone who has high cholesterol or something, for example.

I'm basically allowed olive oil and that's all so a high fat diet will never work for me.

a traditionally trained health care practitioner would probably have people like Sinbad and I put against a wall and shot :D

as I've mentioned before your average nutritionist and GP have been trained on the fundamentals of nutrition based on the bad science that's been prevalent for the past 40/50 years

Dont wanna loose weight ... if anything I can do with a tiny little bit more ... but have started doing sit ups now .... been developing a little muffin top which I now want to get rid of :-) Dont want a six pack ... just want tummy to be a bit flatter again :-)

Yeh, I am on the fence, have combined CICO with Low carb. Working for me ok. Have upped the fats but not overboard, so not having cream or bacon, but lots more avo and cheese than usual.

If you have a little muffin top but are skinny - you need to gain muscle. Sit ups aren't gonna help. Squats, Deadlift, Bench, Pullup

Urg ... sounds like a lot of effort. :-(

What does sit ups do then? LIke I said ... dont want a six pack ... just want to strengthen my tummy so it is a bit flatter?

The sit ups will probably make muscle under the fat, so you won't lose the skinny fat.

rather on the fence than on the wrong side of it :D

Oh ok. That is ok .... so long as the muscles get strengthened a little to flatten it then its cool. I am not looking for a rock hard Vin Diesel stomach. :-) I have gained some weight and have gotten a lot of compliments saying I look so much healthier instead of being scrawny ... but it seems it does seem to favour my middle lol.

Well I got your science, by not having carbs how the body will use the fat cells for fuel instead, what you haven't specified why though add fat to the fat, whats the point in eating more fat and how does the body know which fat to use for fuel, that is the part I am not sure about.
