Which performance car for R500k?

Well Renault is building Mercedes Benz now so I am sure they must have come along way

I've always been a proponent for manual shifting - all my cars have been manual up until this point... but modern automatics are far superior.

They can shift a lot faster than any human can and with more gears can keep the car in the ideal torque band for longer. Also the added benefit of being lazy is always a plus.

I'm definitely looking for a automatic.

Well, I would say Audi's interiors are not ostentatious - but they are extremely high quality and well put together.

And personally I prefer their layout and design choices over the other two Germs. It's such a nice place to be in.

They spend all their money on the interior and the rest of the car falls apart or shorts out after 5 years.

Both have their pros and cons, but IMO a real driver car should have a manual as there is no better way to be connected to the road. Look at the top-end BMWs and Porsches. My weekend V8 sits in no traffic and only really does scenic routes, so I prefer manual. As well as the reliability and maintenance factor.

In the case of the early R8’s, the gated manual was generally favoured over the R tronic.

The Q7 has the 8-speed ZF box, so I’m keen to get to know it. Still waiting for her to arrive though.

8 speed ZF is one of the best gearboxes , it is really good. You will enjoy it.

Definitely agree. A mate of mine has an R8, the V10 though, and changing gears feels like an uncontrolled reaming of metal into metal.
 
A white 335i/340i automatic of course.
Or a M140i

You can also unlock some extra ponies after motorplan expires for relatively cheap. Downpipe & software will give you at least a extra 50kw at the wheels and a lot more torques.

B58 has proven to be a lot more reliable than the older n54 & n55

Which are also extremely reliable (just like every 6 cylinder bimmer I have owned)

BMWs being expensive to maintain and unreliable is one of the great urban myths.

Once you go automatic you never go back.

A manual is more “fun” on a track, that is it.
For commuting, highway driving, long distance, short suburban hops, auto is far superior.

Yes. Auto is much better to live with. That nonsense of manual is more fun is utter rubbish. I had a fun manual car will never do it again cause it not fun everyday its just tedious.
