I would.. hey wait that is what I did :D

Gamepass Ultimate + Series S. Got a PS4 here on loan and haven't even touched it
That's what I'm thinking. I missed the last gen completely (had a PS3), and I'm not going to spending 1k+ on games. The only thing holding me back is:
1. Lack of 4K - I can see this being an issue in a few years.
2. The space on the Series S - not sure if you using an external drive to store your downloads?

Also, isn't there some special you can do to get 3 years of gamepass for cheap?

1. It doesn't render in 4K but runs perfectly fine on my 58" 4K at 60 fps. Internal up-scaling working like a dream. Sure if I stand up close and personal I can see the pixels but from the couch its fine.

2. Old games run off external. Internal space will only be an issue in a year or 2 and even then you can just move them around. I have a 2 TB HDD all the games run fine.

3 Yes, you buy 3 years of gold and then join gamepass... there is a whole post about it here somewhere.

Quick resume also works off external.

So would you recommend the Series S?
I don't mind playing games a while after they're released, and I'm not looking to spend cash on buying new games over time. So a cheap machine with game pass seems like the best bet.
It depends what kind of games you like to play. I loved the PS4 exclusives on previous gen so getting a PS5 was non negotiable. If you don't care for them and don't want to spend 1.5k on new games get a Xbox.
I play it on my 65' 4K tv and I think the graphics look decent. It depends how close you are. The internal ssd is really small so I had to buy an external hd. As a second console I think its great.

Thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear. It seems like the perfect console to have if you not a serious gamer and just feel like gaming now and again.

The playing field should be a lot more even this generation. All Bethesda games will only be available on platforms running Game Pass i.e Xbox and PC. So no TES, Starfield or Fallout for PS5.

I also loved the PS4 exclusives, and will probably get a PS5 DE for that reason when the PS5 exclusives start rolling out. At the moment they're all available on PS4 so it's not necessary right now...

The console isn't just for casual players. It's a good choice for players who want to experience GP. Or get introduced into the ecosystem.

It can act as an extension of your gaming pc. Or second console/GP box. But the big advantage that i think it has is it's portability/versatility

Poeple had doubts about it's capability at launch. But based on the performance analysis done on recent titles it turns out to be a capable gaming machine.

Picked up a few new advantages of getting the Series S (in conjunction with gaming PC):
  1. Fiancee is now showing interest so that is quite cool. Crossplay and all that.
  2. XBox controller is great for PC gaming as well. Using it for Flight Simulator at the moment and MS really did a good job with controls.

Chucking out some boxes and this came with the extra series controller I bought, if anyone wants to redeem it.

I must say Xbox is really winning me over the last few weeks. I was skeptical of game pass not long ago but the games coming out and tech like fps boost is amazing and saving me some money. I wasn't that into racing games but i've started with Forza, Dirt and even Wreckfest is keeping my attention. . These are games I never would have bought on PS but on game pass its "free" so why not. I'm currently playing Prey and its great so far.

I'm finding myself using my Series S more than my PS5 and I never thought I would say that.
I kind of went into it knowing I'd be happy with it. I used Gamepass for PC when lockdown started last year. Smashed both Ori's as well as A Plague Tale. Fantastic games, with some feels that I am still working through a year later. So in Dec when I decided it's time to go Xbox (because I wanted something powerful without the cost of a full new gaming PC), I went all in - Series X and 3 years gamepass. No regrets at all. I've played so many games, even games that I wouldn't have bothered picking up or trying if it were not for gamepass (I can only think of The Medium, and Man of Medan, but there were others).

Forza Horizon is ok, but it doesn't blow my socks off. It's a real in betweener game for me. I finished the Dirt 5 campaign but it was quite boring really. Wreckfest is fantastic, popping into an arena to smash people up and get smashed really helps clear the mind after a long day.

I have faith in Sony doing wonderful things with the PS5, but I don't see me buying one until they have a massive PS5 exclusive catalog.
