ZA Cloud Standing

The only local cloud provider i have used is vps.co.za, their cloud is built on onapp which is a truly amazing platform. They are ideal for lab environments as servers can be created within minutes and deleted as quickly. As mentioned countless times on this forum, they support is below par so hosting production servers with them is simply not an option.

Another company rarely mentioned would be Cipherwave. One of their many services is cloud (they refer to it as VPS but you have the option to get a second replicated failover server outside their data centre for redundancy). One thing that i like about them is they don't skimp on hardware like other providers, their datacenter is packed will Dell R720 servers, redundant SAN storage and an enterprise NOC in the same building. They are costly but they are ideal for corporates.

That my friend is well appreciated. Is Cipherwave a local ISP? If so i will gladly add them to the list. By the end of the week I will add a the tally thus far. Its been rather slow but there is movement.

I thank everyone thus for the feedback they have provided. :)

they are, they have their own datacenter in Midrand. They also have one of the largest portfolio of services when it comes to cloud.

edit: something to add, loads of providers will say they have their own datacenter. What they generally have is a few racks in IS, MTN, Ambronex etc... Cipherwave is not one of those, they own the actual building and kit.

I have added them to the list as per your reference, I will also take the time to check them out. I see they do SAAS as well so I will add that to the list. I am glad to see more companies are taking the initiative to innovate.

OnApp is an amazing cloud solution. I love it. Been using it with my Swedish provider now for years. Im actually busy hording some cash so I can setup my own onApp cloud. Just the hardware is not cheap :(

The new version which doesn't require a SAN is rather attractive, I am busy attempting to build a private cloud on Dell T110 servers (picked up complete units a while back for R4500 excl VAT per server with 1x 500GB HDD and 16GB of RAM) but they have since turned into lab boxes for our techies to play with.

The biggest hurdle we currently face is the cost of bandwidth, rackspace and power. It is simply impossible to build your own cloud and be competitive with some of the other providers out there if you are doing things on a small scale.

SAAS is a beast on its own, most of the providers listed so far (excluding Cipherwave) are PAAS (platform) or IAAS (infrastructure) providers. SAAS providers generally outsource the PAAS component of their operations as it is not the core focus.

Yes but some of these providers indicate CRM deployments on demand. This is SAAS as there is no need for underlying P/IaaS administration from the end user. Either way I added it there for the sake of interest from those around.

Now gents... please dont deviate from the topic. I love that we are mentioning if not exploring the options that are available for cloud but I would really just like your input in the existing providers we have locally :(

I will start another thread where we can share ideas on what to run your cloud on and what the community suggests is good :)

Now ghoti and pawn, you both have experience with ISP's locally... please give us your input :(

PS: I will stick to Cloudstack

Lets try and get some demos, pass the credentials around and have a good look at the value of the services.

We are doing some major upgrades on our infrastructure tomorrow night so we would be more than happy to provide a demo account for you guys to play around with next week. We always appreciate feedback and constructive criticism and we are always looking for areas to improve on so I think this is a great idea.

Thanks Oceanhost, that's the spirit!

One of the problems I have with small datacenters is they often dont have the backup and security infrastructure a big datacenter has. Ive seen some really dodgy datacenters! I think this is why I prefer using the larger, well known centers. Also, the economies of scale mean that the pricing is generally better.

Quite nice packages :)

Hi Oceanhost,

Now that seems promising. I think if many of the providers here had this mindset we could start a detailed poll on MBB with more concrete information as to whats expected from an ISP when it comes to VPS &/or Cloud.

I also recommend that those in the business come together and convene on a number of test/benchmarks/milestones so that we may have a bar/expectation that must be met. One that is both fair as well as well as reasonably competitive. That said, competition is the evil that keeps us in the dark, so to succeed we must aim to do this on a platform allowing for many to bring new and fresh ideas to the market for not just performance improvements but also new services. My last statement almost makes MBB sound like a community again other than the long placed advertising cesspool it is on the net O.o #JJ xD

So, if any other ISP is willing to undergo a barrage of tests, and this can be laid out across a number of your offered packages, 3-4 please, I know that myself and few others would be happy to benchpress it for you. In the end it would be a true showcase of what can be found where, value for money over service and support, etc.

Could be a pipe-dream O.o

You make some very good points.

I am glad you share in the view.

I would be more than willing to perform these tests with the demo you provide--I will also take the liberty of posting my findings here on MBB for everyone to evaluate.

you clearly haven't seen the vault door cipherwave has, its a bunker with a 30cm thick door that can only be opened with hydraulics. :)

Anyone tried Go2Cloud? I had a trial account and their platform seemed to work well. Good support for windows stuff (which is not really my thing) and their support guys were on the ball. Worked out a little more expensive than my dedicated server but I keep them for overflow or emergency capacity.

Are they a local provider? If they are I will add them to the list.

As its currently standing I would say its still a toss up in the air O.o... I hope we get more feedback today :(

There's also MI HOST. They are new but I really like their support.

I will add a VPS post to my website. Currently I just list the shared hosting options in my best hosting for your money guides.

But from this page: List of South African Web Hosts, some of the "Read More" links show the hosts that offer VPS services. Though not in a lot of detail and I will definitely add a best VPS for your money post. Tomorrow though I will release November's guide for shared hosting.

Thank you solitude for referring us.

Were still a small company but we do the best we can :) Always dedicated to helping no matter the question!

Thank you again, your support for us is greatly appreciated :)
