ZA Cloud Standing

Used to have everything with OVH, moved everything over to Azure, Google and Rackspace, still have minor hosting on Hostgator in regard with testing purposes.

VPS is at best a horrible compute solution, fixed pricing, not on demand, doesn't offer auto-scaling, generally lacks APIs, I mean I could carry on for hours as to why you can't even compare a VPS to the compute part of a cloud.

However I think saying the VPS is in any way close to a cloud offering is very silly. To me that is like saying because I have an engine (and a shoddy one at that), I have a car.

I haven't seen anything remotely compelling locally in terms of cloud computing...

Just my opinion on the whole matter.

Thats why I took the liberty to mention that VPS is not exactly cloud but keep in mind that many people searching for cloud and virtually hosted instances of X are generally under the impression VPS is cloud. This is why I broke down the services from a [IPS]aaS standpoint.

I personally think it should be added to the list of "cloud" if you consider "certain" VPS's are sold based on STACK systems that run without SPOF on a "Cloud" Configured PaaS platform... It will certainly allow for the marketing people to not confuse the **** out of the general public as they already have.

Hi. Apologies for not getting back to you sooner. We haven't forgotten about this. We are currently in the middle of some big hardware & software upgrades (OnApp, SAN's etc.). Once this is done we are going to offer 7 day trials as standard so we will give you one of those accounts to test with.

Thats perfect. I look forward to testing it and providing my results here.

Good news!

I am eager to transfer my Amazon EC2 (micro) Instance to a Cape Town based VPS provider. Oceanhost has a very tempting product (compared below with product from US based atlantic.net)

Atlantic: 2048 MB 2.4 GHz Xeon 160 GB 40 Mbps 1TB Transfer $19.94
Oceanhost: 2048 MB ? GHz 40 GB ? Mbps 50GB Transfer R190.00

The only thing that prevents me from switching over to Cape Town based VPS provider is that I could not find any VPS providers with a trial account. It took me a very long time to learn how to use Amazon EC2, but it was on a free micro instance.

Benchmarks and/or trial accounts will help me make a much better recommendation to my partners. Thank you! (both to Oceanhost trial initiative and to the creator of this thread)

Your very welcome :) Its always good to see someone appreciate what we are trying to do here at MyBB... I have come to think of it as a place away from... Well a place xD

We will have added feedback from your end I hope :)

Hi there, just to fill in the blanks...

Atlantic: 2048 MB 2.4 GHz Xeon 160 GB 40 Mbps 1TB Transfer $19.94
Oceanhost: 2048 MB 2.4 GHz Xeon 40 GB 70-90 Mbps 50GB Transfer R190.00

We generally do not offer trial account since the VPS’s are deployed in our enterprise cloud.
The development of our standard cloud is in the pipeline and this will enable us to facilitate free trial accounts. There is no ETA on its deployment at present.
However, we are willing to participate in this thread as a show of good sportsmanship.
Please send me a pm I will liaise with our cloud architects regarding your request.

It will be detailed so not to worry. I do nitpick when its technology.

Some recent interest has been shown in this thread from ISP's so I will do everything I can to keep this girl alive.

We should have a benchmark from one ISP soon :)

Watch this space.

Let us know if you need some freelancers to assist with the reviews.
