This sucks big time! Why do I have to pay (quite a bit of money) to get features that are already on the iPhone? Bugger that, I'm going to wait a couple of hours and see if there is any DRM on this cuz if I have to splash out the bucks I'll give it away to anyone who wants it.

This is a lot worse than the wifi-n updater and the iPhone price drop. I think there is going to be quite a backlash.

Yeah. Considering they just gave away the apple TV upgrade they can't expect anyone to believe the excuse they used for the 802.11n upgrade.

I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't what people end up remembering about this Mac world.

It was a very odd move. I can't see the thinking behind it.

I got the update this morning and no changes can be seen. Once I updated iTunes there was the option to pay for the update. Problem is you can't pay for it cos SA isn't on the list of the approved countries. So how do you get it anyway?

For now it seems SA consumer are SOL. I'm still debating whether I want this update enough to pay $20 for it.

I want this update for the mail app. I will wait to see if there is a way to getthe file from the istore.

I am currently looking into getting the $20 part. I see there is a way to use your paypal account in iTunes.

Definately glad I bought myself a Cowon A3 PMP (which plays AAC and interfaces with a Mac anyway) instead of an iPod Touch. $20 extra for?
I may be a Mac Pro user and love FCP Studio 2 but I stopped being an iPod fan in 2005.

I bought the $20 update last night and was very impressed with the "unlocked" features. I am not even worried about the paying as it's not much. That said on principle Apple shouldn't have charged for it. Maybe enough noise will be made that they will credit people the money in the form of iTunes credit.

The GMAIL app works seriously well. Way better than the safari version. The stocks does what it says. the Weather is a Vista lookalike (more the other way around) which you can add as many cities as you want and page through them (I have added 5 so far). The maps is VERY nice. I tested the triangulate option to "find me" but it doesn't work with the WIFI (yet). I know Google analytics is able to pinpoint your location to the suburb in Cape Town so will see about that. Also adding safari shortcuts is nice. it takes a screenshot of the page and places it on your home page which now can be 2 pages if you swipe to the side. Very cool. All in all I never wanted an iPhone for the phone features so I am happy they brought the gap between them closer regarding applications.

Hope this helps the guys wanting to make a decision on the purchase.

How To Buy ?

How did you buy this update ?
Via itunes ?
If So, how ?

Please help.

How big is the update?
Can you update more than one touch with the update?
Is it DRM'd?

Come on dish the dirt! Do you get to set the mail download preferences same as on the mac?

I called the local apple retailers to see how a south african can buy the update. You simply can't. You can have an apple account but the credit card and paypal accounts need to be registered in the states in order to use it. I had store credit from when I went the states. I bought a voucher thing from Target or something and loaded it that way. I think you can buy itunes vouchers online (like you can buy microsoft points for your xbox).

The update is 165MB and then you need to download the new itunes as well. I could download it through my local account so it could be cached somehow. I used the apple update for iTunes/Quicktime. When you plug in the touch and check for a new version it downloads it automatically in itunes.

I don't know if you can update more than one touch with the update. When you buy it, you need to plug in the touch and then hit "sync", then it does the update/unlock and then it's all there. I don't know anyone else with a touch to see if they could do it as well. I am guessing not.

I don't have a mac (yet) so don't know the settings for the mac. But you can simply choose which provider of mail you use, I use gmail and then you tap in your username and password and it's all there. The interface isn't like the gmail interface. it's has it's own more tidy way. you can use your contacts on the phone to email out etc. it's very easy and simple to use.

Also I noticed that it caches most of your browsing on the maps. so when you aren't close to a WIFI spot, you can still play around with it. Really cool stuff.

wow! you did it thats so cool. i am gonna try get the itune gift card through ebay that should be a breeze, but idn't have a US account what then? help!

This is nonsense. How can an update be charged for? I mean honestly? Isn't it good enough for them that I purchased the product already? And then they wonder why I visit my warez forums so often....
