In a SPIEGEL ONLINE interview, Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, the German government's climate protection adviser, argues that drastic measures must be taken in order to prevent a catastrophe. He is proposing the creation of a CO2 budget for every person on the planet, regardless whether they live in Berlin or Beijing.

Introduction of carbon tax suggested
The Commission on Taxation has recommended the introduction of a carbon tax to help cut Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Example of how it would work from an older article:
Every adult in the UK would be given an annual carbon dioxide allowance in kgs and a special carbon card.

The scheme would cover road fuel, flights and energy bills.

Every time someone paid for road fuel, flights or energy, their carbon account would be docked.

A litre of petrol would use up 2.3kg in carbon, while every 1.3 miles of airline flight would use another 1kg.

When paying for petrol, the card would need to swiped at the till. It would be a legal offence to buy petrol without using a card.

When paying online, or by direct debit, the carbon account would be debited directly.

Anyone who doesn't use up their credits in a year can sell them to someone who wants more credits. Trading would be done through specialist companies.

Another bloody tax

Interesting foot note, for those who pay attention to certain theories ;)
Sydney, Australia - Rothschild Australia and E3 International are set to become key players in the international carbon credit trading market, an emerging commodity market that analysts estimate could be worth up to US$150 billion by 2012.

Well at least they advocating doing something drastic about it. After all billions are going to perish and /me thinks installing a few fluorescent light bulbs ain't going to help much :erm:

I don't like this proposal. A bit too invasive for my tastes.

Bloody pirates! I spit on them. Talk about screwing on the little guy.

I feel like walking into the Karoo and dousing it with some fuel and burning it all up. They'd probably jail me for "excessive carbon emission".

I guess you have to think twice before inviting friends over for an afternoon braai. It might come back to haunt you. This borders on ridiculous.

Not really, braaing should be fairly carbon neutral - if you get your braai wood from a sustainable forest. The CO2 that you emit from burning the wood gets re-absorbed by the next tree growing in the plantation.

 before long, they'll put a restriction on how much you can fart in a day.

Alan.. do you really believe there will be a catastrophe?

If they want to do something, they should make a fine for pollution. That is a real problem!

Carbon Dioxide is a naturally occurring gas and is believed by many scientists to be potentially helpful to the environment.

How do you propose preventing a catastrophe without invasive policies?

I honestly don't know. It would be great if individuals actually just gave a **** to be honest, but they don't.

Depends how you determine what a "catastrophe" is. I'm far from convinced GW is primarily the result of man's conduct.

Here in lies the problem. You can't really claim billions will suffer as a result of MMGW so we should do something about it and then give them the option to take it or leave it. What do you value more? The planet and it's inhabitants or individual liberties. Evidently you can't have it both ways.
