Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys today announced that Vodacom has made significant progress in the upgrade of its mobile data network, and is set to bump up all their subscribers to 7.2 Mbps at the end of March. To date ‘Vodacom Advanced’ customers had access to speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps, with the rest of the customer base seeing downlink speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps

Mod Note: Thread started to consolidate discussions and prepare for feedback when it gets activated.

Updates: Reports are already in that some profiles have been bumped up. Either test to speed.vodacom.co.za or use MDMA to check your assigned profile (most accurate method).

Another Update: From comments posted in this thread it is clear that some explanation is needed as to what this means.
  • If your internet speed during downloads or tests to speed.vodacom.co.za maxes out at around 3.6Mbps, then you will most likely see an increase in speed once your profile is upgraded.
  • If you are currently getting anything less than that then the upgrade to 7.2 is not going to make a difference.
While network upgrades are always being done all this changes means is where before you were capped to the maximum potential speed of 3.6, given perfect conditions (signal, tower, backhaul) you can potentially hit the new cap of 7.2 speeds.

If your signal is good and you had sub 3.6Mbps speeds you will still have sub 3.6Mbps speeds unless your tower and/or backhaul is upgraded.

Device Update: The K4505 supports 14.4 and should be available in Vodashops late May.

There was a article a week or so ago where Vodacom told mybb that all clients will be moved up to the 7.2 profile free of charge and then I suppose 14.4 will be the new Advanced bundles speed.

Then i guess its a good thing that i bought a 7.2Mpbs capable device.
 
Just out of interest, and I am sorry to go a bit off topic here....but I got a second hand Huawei E156G modem that is currently 3.6 capable. On the net I am getting conflicting reports. Some say that it is 7.2 capable with a firmware update and others say it is maxed out @ 3.6. Anyone have experience with this modem??

Stupid question. I have heard somewhere that Vodacom is "upgrading" their broadband standard customers to the 7.2mbps speed. IS this true and when will this be happening?

Broadband standard goes from 3.6 to 7.2. Broadband Advanced will probably get bumped up to 14.4 so no charge for 7.2

You can have the 7.2Mbps speed now, if you're willing to fork out another R100 (or more, not sure what is going rate now) per Gig.
 
**** 7.2... Reduce my rate/Mb and limit me to 3.6Mbps, which I've never achieved in any case.

I doubt that 14.4 would be available anytime soon (advanced or not) as we don't really have any devices capable of that speed. Not from Vodacom anyway.

I think it has more to do with the market at this stage as broadband providers are getting more competitive in SA. Vodacom has the money to give their subscribers a "small" incentive in return for a bit of brand loyalty.

At the moment the only "competition" in the mobile broadband market is who can get the noddy badge for the first 21Mbps deployment, when what the market actually needs is bigger caps for the same or less spend.
 
7.2 MB/s .. or if you prefer, a minimum of R0.864 a second. ( 12c per MB cheapest in bundle deal * 7.2 )
Or ... R51.84 a minute.
