Super roadblocks for the festive season, will apparently include not just traffic and SAP, but also SARS officials, home affairs, customs officals and possibly even nature conservation in some areas.

Super roadblocks are on the way.

This festive season not only drivers but passengers too are to be checked. And not only the police but a host of other agencies are to man the roadblocks.

Tax dodgers, maintenance evaders, fugitives of any type or anyone transporting illegal and dangerous goods on South African roads, among others, should brace themselves for a hard time, national police commissioner General Bheki Cele has warned.

This was because “multi-disciplinary” roadblocks featuring “highly specialised groups”
such as the South African Revenue Service (SARS), Home Affairs and Customs and Excise would be held countrywide from December 4.

A fleet of hi-tech “spy cars” hit Cape Town’s roads on Wednesday to hunt for law-breakers and the 1.6 million drivers who owe R600 million in unpaid traffic fines.

The technology, which has never been used in the city, features six unmarked traffic vehicles fitted with cameras which record number plates, known as Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras (ANPR).

I'm all for it,there are so many drunk idiots that drive at insane speeds in my area,they could erect a permanent road block here and I'd be quite happy.
I hope they punish those rich twits who do alot of texting and very little driving.I have had many close calls because they have to tell their friends about their new clothes/shoes/holiday house/man/woman/plastic surgery/affair with garden boy/latest abortion etc.

I have no outstanding fines,warrants or anything of the sort so i am not worried.

Really? Do you honestly trust the administration of the South African government department? Sars seems to be the most jacked but I know of someone who got 2 letters from them at the same time. One with a tax refund of R1500 and the other threatening action if some or other overdue taxes where not paid.
This is just another shakedown.

I'm all good with it personally... IF it gets people to drive more responsibly then its a good thing.
 
The city today introduced an “easy payment options” system for fines that are not past the summons date. These include:

l Over-the-counter (cash, cheques and postal orders) at City of Cape Town Cash and Housing offices, municipal courts and city traffic centres.

l Cash payment at all Absa branches and post offices.

l ATM payments – this is restricted to Absa clients only.

l Internet payments with the use of credit cards

l Cellphone payments – via a mobile application site called Pocit which can be downloaded.

l Traffic roadblock payments – cash, cheque, postal orders and credit and debit cards.

If you want to avoid roadblocks you can. You live in a city for a while and you pretty much learn the common spots.
 
I'd rather choose freedom over security any day. This country is slowly turning into a police state.

Agreed.

My alternative is to sit it out until they offer me a discount for not paying: ANC congrtatulates debt write off

Broken windows policy would start with road worthiness, drivers license, car license etc.

From there we can get to the drunken driving, recklessness and speeding.

Or if you've had your licence plates cloned, or if some of the aforementioned "highly specialised groups" have somehow screwed up or if your identity has somehow been stolen. Hell, nothing like victimising the average Joe to seem like you're actually doing something.
