iPad 2, will it have a "retina" screen or not?

iPad 2 is coming. Everyone knows that. What I am wondering is, will the new iPad have a display which is 4x the resolution, just like the jump to iPhone 4.

The iPad will eventually make the resolution leap, but will it do so this year? If it does, I will definitely want to have one!

If it sounds entirely impossible and unrealistic (we're talking 2048x1536 on a 10" screen here!!), some recent developments make me think it's possible. The latest mobile GPU's certainly have the horsepower needed, and the Dual-Core ARM chips coming soon mean that the computer tech is certainly there. The display can be made. What's more, rumours seem to be suggesting this new display more and more. When John Gruber mentioned it, that's when I suddenly realized there's a very big chance it could happen.

Apple need something to show why the iPad 2 is better than all the new Android tablets, could this be it?
 
i want to see the rumours or actual facts or leaks of the iPad 2....so far its just speculation
 
All we can do is speculate. Apple will keep everything hidden, as well as they can. Who thought the iPhone 4 was going to have the 960x640 display before it was announced? I didn't, but I was really hoping for it.

I'd say the odds are pretty good for a higher-rez screen this year. If not, then next year.
 
ipad 2 rumors are probably spread by other manufacturers to keep people on the fence from buying anything until there is a better range out. Asus tablet looks interesting, but expensive, but its windows based and looks more like a laptop replacement which the ipad isn’t.
 
Retina? Makes no sense.
 
at retina's pixel density it will be a full HD panel, unless its powered by fuel cells, but that would eat the battery... nom nom nom
 
Higher resolution displays don't require more power, they need more processing power. I believe the current iPad battery could handle it, with an upgraded CPU & GPU.

They do need more power as there are more pixels to light up.

There will be no "retina display" on the iPad 2. But there may be a slight resolution increase.
 
And im just getting my iPad today! :-(
 
You won't regret it. You can always sell it later if you plan on upgrading.

A case will help keep it looking pristine. :)
 
Come to think of it, it would be amazing if Apple "obsoleted" the first gen iPad so quickly.

Anyway, yes a case is absolutely essential with the iPad.

I doubt they will. I think we'll see the same situation as with the iPhone where the previous generation is heavily discounted into a base model.

Will be getting the case next month.....as it is too costly here in SA
 
I don't think HDMI out is the answer to this. The PNG's are definitely exactly double the original resolution. The next iPad will have a 2048x1536 screen!! Better than any Macbook Pro.

i don't mean "the screen would be like the macbook Pro", i ment that their will be a "HD" version of the iPad called "iPad HD" and this will be the "Pro" version of the iPad

I get you. The new iPad pro/ iPad 2 can go for $600 while the old one goes for $400.
