All these people look through a pipe.They only see what is infront of them the BIG 76% but not how grappy the service is against overseas adsl providers.

The purpose of this research was to establish the superior broadband service in South Africa according to the most prominent broadband variables, and DSL proved to be that service. We have done numerous press releases this year to indicate Telkom’s inability to compete with international DSL offerings (and will continue to do so), but please just see this report for what it is: a local comparison. I can understand that there is a great deal of unhappiness with Telkom, but we can not dispute that DSL currently produces the best performance for the price in South Africa.
Our next report will be an international comparison which will highlight what you guys are discussing.

While the survey may be academically correct in all its findings, it's bein bandied about as a statement of best service, not best service amongst an unacceptable choice of services.
I suspect that many journalists are seeing the ITWeb report and then reporting on that without reading your research.

No prizes for guessing how many times that report will be mentioned by Telkom in their press releases.
I think almost everyone in this forum understands that Telkom would almost be guaranteed to come out tops in a head to head comparison of broadband options. Is there really any point in coming up with reports like these if they only end up giving Telkom even more ammo?

If MyADSL is going to be about Broadband in the country and not just a site to dog Telkom then this type of real research is required.
Just because you don't like the answers is no reason to look for them.

Perhaps my comment (more self praise ammo) has been misinterpreted, if so I apologise.
I fully agree that any research needs to be factual to the nth degree for all the reasons mentioned above, however the Telkom media machine will use this as a license to blow their own trumpet from the highest hilltop with (in the world according to Telkom) MyAdsl's blessing and it wont be the first time.
Including or comparing our best local service with other similar services outside of SA in the same report would merely put matters into perspective and add to the completeness of the report (albeit a local broadband report).
It has nothing to do with 'liking or disputing the results' or Telkom bashing.

This must be emphasised in any future report. I would go so far as to say this should appear first in the report, so there is absolutely no confusion that the MyADSL member community does not think the Telkom's offering is fair. As it is plain as day, we believe broadband prices in this country are astronomical and can consume enough paper to wipe out the Amazon forests to prove it.

The fact that Telkom ADSL came out tops will not go down well with iBurst, Sentech and even Vodacom and MTN.
If the public believes Telkom is doing a terrible job, being rated worse than Telkom is terrible PR for the other players.
The report gives these guys a look from the real world onto their services and where they can improve.
I guess iBurst will be fuming being rated worse than Sentech...
It was already indicated that if the cellphone 3G people would drop rates, their ratings would increase.
The value of this report is not in bashing/praising Telkom. It is providing a window into reality for suppliers.

Indeed. I had to release the results, but had lots of work at 'work' as well. When I have more time I will work on an international comparison (must have it ready for ICASA anyway)...bwana v.6 said:

In progrmmers lingo: A bug free program is outdated. A perfect report would be of no use anymore.

If you need help in anyway, let me know. By family are in the UK, they have a 2 meg line with NTL. I could ask them to do "out of the lab" tests if needed. I think the best comparisons would be with Oz, Brazil, Mexico and India, seeing that they are in a very similar situation as what we are in, economically and demographically.rpm said:
