IS bandwidth upgrades

Does anyone have any info on the IS bandwidth upgrades that are supposed to happen this month? When, where, how, what?

IS ADSL update

27 January 2006


Internet Solutions deployed 2x155Mbps IPC links that allowed IS to carry ADSL traffic between the Telkom & IS networks. Both of these links were running at full capacity which would have caused a significant increase in latency and packet loss for all IS ADSL users.

As part of the IS capacity management process, IS ordered a 3rd IPC link nearly 3 months ago in order to prevent any capacity issues. Unfortunately due to Telkom bandwidth shortages in the Rosebank exchange the 3rd IPC circuit has been delayed.

Telkom Planning Division has confirmed that the 3rd IPC will be installed on the 20th February 2006. We requested that Telkom look at another alternative access medium that would help alleviate the bandwidth shortage until they had ATM capacity in Rosebank.

IS & Telkom have recently put various temporary measures in place including the provision of an interim amount of bandwidth to alleviate some contention on the IPC links until the 3rd IPC link is installed
 
Yes, thanks WickedWeasel, we know all that from previous posts, but IS was also supposed to be doing more bandwidth upgrades through the satelite side of things, though I suppose those are still dependant on the interconnect with Telscum <spit>.

However, if things do not improve this month it isn't really worth keeping the [adsl] account is it? Or hosting my new web-site with one of their providers. They may be the biggest provider of content, but whats the point if it is slower than international hosting?
 
This is a factor that is always very concerning to us. While I dont blame IS as they have done everyone in their power, Telkom is to blame for all of this, but the consumer always looses !
 
Mr WickedWeasel - Telkom is not the only problem. If you are the major ISP surely you should be able to predict growth on your network! Everybody waits for Telkom, not only IS. You upgrade your network when a certain level is reached!! You do not milk it, until all your customers experience problems!
Surely IS has the network engineers and designers to have foreseen this dilema!
 
@ nodski, they ordered the IPC link 3 months ago, before there was any problems, AFAIK, and so far its been only Telkom's fault for taking so long it get the link installed

Thats correct ngage, telkom in its bright mind thought its best to delay the process because of municipal certification and what not.

Yea I remmber them talking something about getting 2 new international satalite links for their network las nov. they said these links will become operational in feb so whatsup with that?

Who said its not operational yet? :)

Sure, havn't heard officially that its up, but it very well may be.
 
You think 2 or 3 months is long! How long do you think they worked on deploying ADSl, **** they were the first ones to chicken out in 2002, then they plan for a year or 2 . They should have ordered a upgrade long ago! If you are signing up Uncapped customers like hell you should no youre going to have trouble if you dont plan in advance! Even today you can go onto any major IT website and you will find ads for Uncapped from IS, you can find ADS in it magazines for uncapped, every single IS reseller is reselling IS uncapped!! You would think they would put a freeze on new rollouts with all the trouble they have!!

I have a very high regard for IS based on many years of excellent service since the mid-nineties. I acknowledge that they have current issues, but am considering signing up for their uncapped since I am sure they will sort these issues out.

If it was up i'd expect 50Kb/sec flatout on international since theres all the "extra" ;)

What do you get internationally? I max my connection out on IS since 1 week ago when things got better.
