Acceptable Noise Margins and Line Attenuation?

So I'm experiencing bad ping times and latency issues on multiple unshaped accounts from different ISP's but if I download I get 620KB constant.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6144 kbps 640 kbps
Line Attenuation 42 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 11 db 12 db

Would dropping my line speed to 4MB improve my ping times?
 
Those stats are fine.

In general I advise people to try and get their SNR margins 12dB or higher. 10dB should already be stable enough in most cases.

For 4Mbps connections, you'll typically need 40dB or lower downstream line attenuation so that your SNR margins will be 12dB or higher.
The line attenuation is pretty much linked to the telephone line's length from your house to the DSLAM (which mostly resides in the Telkom Exchange).

Do you plug your router straight into the socket or use a long cable? Cause your attenuation for Down/Up shouldn't have that much difference between them.

30.5 db is quite a big difference which maybe be indicating a problem on the line if you are plugging straight into the adsl socket

Feel free to post a traceroute here.
For example, open up command prompt and then run like: tracert www.google.co.za

The downstream line attenuation can easily be twice/three times as much as the upstream line attenuation.
Using a long telephone cable inside your home won't make a noticeable difference if your ADSL line's distance to the DSLAM is about 3km.

Those latencies are good, so I really don't know what you're complaining about...
 
I get bad lag when gaming online in the evenings and running speedtest return bad results :(

if its a congested exchange... then yes the evening will be the worst.

its like that for me anyway... during the day is fine, but from 6pm onwards... :sick:

Why are exchanges busy in the evenings?

You would think congested exchanges are bad during the day when people are working.

Are residential customers really that responsible for pushing up usage on an exchange collectively?

I guess SAIX News Servers does open up at 6PM :P

dude this is when everyone gets home... They logon and start their 50GB 1080p porn downloads :erm:

exchanges in commercial areas are designed to handle that kind of traffic. the residential exchanges havent had to deal with that kind of thing yet, and now they have to... and they falling over...

Just look at how my pings increased over the evening last night (other thread)

you cant dispute it really
 
hmm.. so the 30GB local only bandwidth I use every night to grab my series at 6PM is probably then what many others do (with their own respective accounts) and congests the exchange.

Does make perfect sense. Didn't think there were that many downloads on the Telkom network though. Given the majority of people arent very IT literate... but yes.. I do not dispute the congested thing at all.. just find it interesting how easy it seems to be to push an exchange to its limits.

well then you have the current situation.

something I found interesting last night.

When I want to play HoN I unplugg my ADSL and use my iPhone to play. the tower I connect to its at the same location as the exchange I connect to with my ADSL.

international pings on my iPhone were about 300ms whereas on my adsl last night was about 800ms. local pings were exactly the same on my asdl to my iPhone... so they obiously routing the LOCAL traffic through that exchange, but not the international

some useless info for you :)
