If I go to Rhodesfield, don't exit, and go back to Sandton, what will the trip cost?

Is it easy to go on Gautrain without paying like its easy on normal trains?

No. Security is everywhere, and your card is often checked in transit.

been there done that.

Made the mistake .

I went from Sandton to Rhodesfield and back again to Sandton, unaware that you need to swipe out again - to enable you to swipe to exit at the other stop.

The boom will fail to open, you will be escorted to the office by security and they will make you pay for the trip and the penalty for not swiping out.

you can't even get close to the train without using your card at the turnstiles

No it isn't. No-one has ever checked my card on any Gautrain or bus, or that of anyone I know. If they do check it, it's definitely not often as I use the train a lot. You scan it at the gate or upon entering the bus, like at first-world public transport systems. Similar to Paris or London for example.

OP: An alarm will go off, everyone will just ignore it since it goes off every few minutes anyway and you just walk through one of the broken, permanently-stuck-open gates. There are about a thousand security guards but they care about as much as your local municipality does about your electricity bill. The trip then costs zero, no money is deducted from your card but the gate doesn't open. I wouldn't recommend doing it on purpose but it happened to me a few weeks ago.

I went from Hatfield to Midrand stations, then got a call about a sort of emergency I had to attend to back home so I just got on the train going the other way. Got back to Hatfield station, held my wallet to the scanner, alarm goes off, no-one gives a hoot, I stand there looking confused a bit and then go through a gate that's stuck open. Got on the bus and the balance is just reduced by R20 for the bus trip.

I have used the train every working day for more than a year now. They *DO* check your cards in transit from time to time. Can't say about the bus, I never use it.

Thanks for the info. Won't try it then ;)

Whatever you do... don't get on at Rhodesfield and think they will let you go to the airport. They make you go back to Marlboro and then come back

I think there is a time limit - 15 mins I would guess at, where you can still go out of the station that you came in at.
One day I was in a bit of a fog, and ended up leaving my wallet at home. I realized while I was standing on the platform waiting to go to Sandton. I went back down, they gave me a free parking ticket once I explained my stupidity to them, and I was able to go out... although I think the school fees were around R12 or so... not entirely sure, didn't check it or pay attention - the alarm didn't go off, it just let me out like normal. I was just grateful that I didn't have to fork out R95 for parking without using the train. :p
