Just got a quote from Fury Ford for my 2005 MX-5's 90K service, check this out:

Normal Service (filters, plugs etc.) - R2435
Brakes Front (skimming + pads) - R2604
Brakes Rear (skimming + pads) - R2017
Timing belt - R2600

Total: R9656

This is insane! I'll never pay that. I can most probably get brand new discs and brakes from the US for what these guys charge! :mad:

Told the guy to just do the normal service, I'll sort out the rest.
So if anyone knows of a relatively cheap place in the Randburg area that can help me out with brakes I'd be truly grateful.

As for the timing belt, screw it, according to many threads and discussions I've read the timing belt is still fine at 90K. I'll get it replaced on my next service.

Get new discs... the MX-5 was sold in this country, therefore there will be parts in this country.

I would guess you can get a set of discs all round for about R1500, and your brake pads will be about R1400 all round as well.

You know, this is how the same costs for when I take the Merc in:
Major service: R2000 (inclusive of all that)
Brakes front + back (iirc around R4k)
The belt was around that price.

I don't know about Ford, but I know different VW dealers have different prices on parts - brake pads went from R700 to R1400...
 
I thought the service was going to ask 90K! I suggest rearranging the title to:
Kiss My Furry Nuts Ford!
 
The most insane thing of all is I can get brand new Brembo discs front and back including brake pads in the US for R1860, of course you'll need postage but it'll still work out to about the same as just skimming and brake pads on the rear brakes...

Some of those prices are crazy but although its a 90 000 km service, that belt is 6/7 years old. If that timing belt snaps, what else can be affected & damaged too? What will that total cost be then? Something to think about.

Who's mad now? I would go and buy all the spares (incl timing belt) you need from a spares place and DIY or get someone else to do it.

90K ... I so read that wrong, thought you where paying 90K for the service!!!

The belt will be fine, like I said, I'll get it done next.
Also, if the belt snaps the engine doesn't kill itself.

Do the disks even have to be skimmed? Dealers have a sneaky habit of skimming even when not needed.

I found at last service that pads were also significantly more expensive when purchased "at service" than if I were to purchase them myself from another dealer. So phone around.

I ended up purchasing them myself and did the replacement at home. Total of about hour of work for me, and I've never touched a caliper before in my life. So if you're in any way mechanically inclined, check out that option as well. (Guess if you were though you would have done it already :))
 
What are you crying for.... my 100k service alone, with no brake issues or whatever R11 000. confidence in motion
