Simfy Africa launches in SA

I'm currently trying it out and it works pretty well..

My main issue if the offline file storage. Doesn't look like you can sync between devices, so every device you use Simfy on has to redownload the same tracks, if you want to have the same playlists on multiple devices. Also I'm told that it's not possible to backup your offline music.. So if you download 100GB of music on your laptop, and it gets stolen, you're left with having to download all your music from them again.

Considering South Africa doesn't have the best broadband access as it is.. Simfy had better address these problems if they want to stand a chance :-)
 
I've tried it all weekend and I like it so far - especially since it actually streams over my iBurst.

Guessing the idea is not to try and download 100GB of music, but stream most of it and download whatever you want to listen to this week during your commute.

But must say, would be nice to have a sync option between devices.
 
The streaming works great, and the selection is also pretty good.

That makes sense, but often people have very slow Internet connections and use public WiFi, friends or their companies Internet for this sort of thing.. Even at 10GB, that's more than most peoples monthly ADSL cap!

The syncing would be very nice.. and a more polished Mac OS client.. I'm sure they'll improve a lot over time though.

They said about 1MB per 1 min of music, so to stream 1024*10 MB = 170 hours worth of music. I doubt most people will stream that much per month. Also, perhaps its time that people start realising their caps are REALLY small and start investigating something else - services like these might just create that awareness!
 
just started to test this out.. Quality is not bad at all. and It has quite allot of music.. But It will not work for much longer.. Did a Search for "Jurie Els" it found way to much albums.. (Think I am now scared... hehe)
 
I also signed up this afternoon, impressions so far are really great. Except for the lack of an iPad App, although a comment from them on their Facebook page said that it being developed and should launch end year.

What still impresses me the most is the smaller labels being included. Epitaph for example. Still and independent label I think, but they have all my teenage years bands signed to them.

Only thing that I've noticed so far out of the 100 or so tracks I've played is one track from Pennywise, called Bro Hymn Tribute. It was a 8 minute long song dedicated to the bass player who committed suicide. After the 2-3 minutes song, there was a long silence, then a 2-4 minute long piano solo started. The song on Simfy is 8 minutes long, but has no piano solo. Just nothing after the song. Pity, that was still one of my favourite things ever. Thinking the album had finished playing, only to be reminded by the piano solo that it still had more awesomeness left. Guess there will be a few song that have been changed for licensing reasons.

But for R2 a day, I'm in and ready to go.
Used to listen to ShoutCast all day while working, so this is a major upgrade actually.
