Petrol price to be hiked 31c

By the time 2010 is here we would have reverted back to horse & carriage cos petrol is R30/L.
 
Don't try to be optimistic. More like ox and wagon, horses will be for rich folk.
 
Saw an interesting article the other day about bio fuels and a huge bio fuels plant we are building.
Anyone know anything more about bio fuels. Can they just simply replace petrol, or would new engines/parts be required?

it hedges urself against petrol inflation

everytime petrol price goes up sasol shares does too, just not immediate

under correction:

they replace diesel in diesel engines - almost without conversion. There are some sticky "warranty" issues though.

I am all for bio fuels - I heard there is one made from algae - what a brilliant idea. Algea grows quick, produces oxygen, consumes CO2 etc. Way to go.

Oh, and GWB need not invade, sorry liberate, anyone for it.

Also in that article I read, they were using excess maize (but apparently many other products can create bio fuel, such as sugar cane) to produce the bio fuel. SA has plenty of this and it provides another big buyer to the market for farmers. Apparently it is also labour intensive (they will be employing 10 000 workers) which is great unemployement.

This seems great for our economy on so many levels.

Part of me wishes the oil prices goes up even further, spurring massive demand for bio fuel
 
I reckon just get everyone in SA to fart in a jar, then we will have baie-fuel.. :)

Yeah, the best thing would be for oil to hit $500 per barrel (yes, that is two zeroes). That way, the tech that already exists can be utilised.
SA also have miles of underused land that can be converted for bio fuel use - you can grow algea on sewage farms (and the Juksei for that matter :D )
 
I have been getting a lot of email about only buying petrol from South African petrol stations (SASOL, ENGINE etc) to try force the other companies to drop there prices. Do you think some thing like this would work?
 
No, this tactic does not work. Petrol prices are completely regulated by the Government. The retail price of petrol will remain the same across the board. No "company" is allowed to discount the petrol price.
 
There is no way those email "scams" would work - chances are the ones suggesting boycotting Engen are sent by BP marketing and visa versa :D

BUT: the whole thing will probably have a reverse effect IF it is done as suggested. Ask yourself, what causes prices to rise. The answer is of course supply and demand. Now, if the supply remains the same at (say) BP, and everyone boycotts Engen, BP will have a higher demand and the same supply. Therefore, the supply/demand ratios will demand higher prices, or shortages.

I saw an article in Popular Mechanics for this month on biofuels - I have not read the article yet, I just bought the mag.

Add to that the Fuel Tax they wish to impose on Cape Motorists.

Cape Motorists:
1. Fact. WC pays twice the amount in Licence Fees compared to other areas in South Africa.
2. Question: How much of The National Fuel Levy of R1.16c a litre comes back to the Western Cape. I heard nothing? .. (Note: R1.16 is the figure given by the media. I believe this figure to be more?)

The Greedy Government's around the world are going to tax us to death.
They know full well how to collect money, but fail dismally in actually providing adequate services and infrastructure.
Time to reinvent Robin Hood. :D
