Neotel to focus on WiMax and CDMA

800mhz spectrum will prbly just be able to provide basic telephony and internet.

So i guess were stuck with using wimax.........oh wait.........we can't use it yet......nice1 really nice.

Nothing new. Wireless over the last mile was always the plan.

We seem to heading into the third quarter of 2007 now. Begiining to doubt that we will see anything this year.
 
I could be reading too much into it, but I get the distinct impression that NeOTel has perhaps only just reached a decision about whether to use WiMax or not in place of a copper last mile for ADSL[2+?].

NeOTel would be wasting everyone's time if it did go about putting in copper for the entire length of the local loop - even Telkodemonopolies is allegedly shortening the copper length of the local loop by increasing the fibre optic length of the local loop.

Now I want NeOTel to tell us what its fibre optic plan|strategy might be - will NeOTel ever provide wired triple play etc? Can we expect ADSL2+ in very few areas, or will it be ADSL in even fewer areas...?
 
Just out of interest, does anyone know how reliable wireless is over copper, specifically in terms of consistent performance? At the moment I'm rather wary of all forms of wireless broadband since I have yet to find one that offers the kind of latency I get on ADSl over copper. 3G is fast, but has high latency. Same with iBurst and Sentech. And that is if you are in an area where you get adequate signal strength. What is the story with WiMAX and CDMA?

I'm guessing there will be ADSL2+ in a few areas (Major cities). No ADSL. Regular broadband will be via WiMax and CDMA. But that is just a guess (Regarding ADSL and ADSL2+)
 
Wireless latency is improving the whole time. But it isn't something that I follow too closely, as latency under a certain amount is not something that affects me (or most people for that matter)

By definition copper wires are wires, by definition wireless mean no wires.

How would they compete with Telkom if they just use radio - ie. Wimax and CDMA? Any company can do this with a bit of cash. Where's the local loop unbundling ....??

Nope, this is just because Eskom ran fiber along a lot of their electrical infrastructure (my gran actually got a letter from them a few years back requesting access to some of the wires which ran through her farm so they could do just that).

That's just it. Neotel are smart enough to realise that ICASA might not get LLU and SAT3 sorted out in time, so they're considering all their options. They'd still prefer to use the SAT3 and the local loop, but they're not putting all their eggs in that basket.

And judging by Paris Mashile's spectacular performance last night, I'm starting to think things still won't be much better by the end of the year.

We seriously need someone to take the initiative and figure out ways to (legally) work around ICASA, rather than waiting for them to fix our problems.
 
Er... sorry, I was querying the reliability of wireless as opposed to (over) copper...
Dont think there's any hard & fast rule on this one ... depends on each's own environment/location. Personally my iBurst & 3G/HSDPA are more reliable than my telephone line (e.g. during thunderstorms etc.), but I'm sure other's will have the opposite result.
 
Oh for crying in a bucket, ICASA just make Telkom give Neotel access to the LL!!! :mad:

What am I saying.. *sigh* we might as well ask Jackie Selebi to do his job and deal with the crime problem :(
 
how would wireless compete with a wired network?

surely the latency would be around 200-500? locally

Well, it is not that high on iBusrt. I usually get 60-120ms to local sites. And iBurst certainly has better latency to international sites than IS ADSL.

My iBurst connection has certainly been more stable and reliable than my ADSL connection, especially during rain/storms.

The biggest problem I've seen with wireless is network congestion, particularly at peak times.

But, of course, you just can't get 4MB/s uncapped on iBurst!
