TV enabled PC, Laptop and Cellphone users must have license

The SABC pointed out that only one valid TV licence is required per household which means that, as long as the household consists of a single family, multiple TV enabled appliances are covered by the single licence.

But then again, you go to any "around the corner" Pawn shop and pick up that
TV without any hassle :)
 
What is frustrating is that I don't even have an ariel nor dish nor anything to recieve a TV signal, but I do have a TV to watch DVD's. Why must I pay the SABC for the right to own a TV?
 
Lovely, now they want to start forcing those with new cellphones to pay TV licenses as well. I guess thats just one more thing to make sure my new phone does NOT have, as I will never buy a TV while I have to subsidise SABC for the crap that they air.

Actually if they are going to get so snotty about paying for SABC (lets get real the licence is about receiving the broadcast, not the actual device), I should have the right to refuse the service, and get DSTV to block those channels.
The SABC won't do that as they will lose every last one of their paying audience. Another goverment sponsered way to screw the few without vaseline.

Multichoice may not block 'free-to-air' channels!! Its a sad reality!! Worst of all is that SABC isn't even free-to-air! The only 'free-to-air' channel we have is e-TV...but ja, DSTV is not allowed to block SABC, they must broadcast the channels!

Then ICASA should do there job and regulate that we as the public should be allowed a choice :mad:

Why in the hell do we still have to have The Gestapo pushing our head in the sand!
 
How in Hades do they hope to enforce that?

The TV licence model is seriously outdated and inefficient model, (should really be called a tuner licence). I think it's time it was scrapped.
 
This now getting totally stupid.This licensing is waste, which they can never inforce and they know it,they'll go after people they can catch (certain ethnic groups they won't bother with areal on the dwelling or not) but serioulsy i will not pay for the right in owning a tv.even like some people state here that don't watch tv and only watch dvd's and such, bah @ licenses
 
one day we will look back at this instance in life and say: "what the hell was the public broadcaster thinking?" this thing with licences is really unfair if not senseless and outright stupid. i will not pay any TV licence fees. i repeat, i will not pay any TV licence fees.

You don't. Your TV has the potential to receive the TV signal. You pay for the right to watch SABC. Whether you make use of that right or not is up to you.
 
Interesting debate - my whole house receives the SABC signal - and a whole host of other signals. The fact that my house is incapable of doing anything with the signal that it is receiving doesn't seem to be the point according to the SABC dude. It would be interesting to use that arguement in the case where you have a tv that you use to watch just DVDs.

But I suppose that you are really licencing the tuner - not the tv or phone or whatever.

As to arguing that the group of friends living together isn't a family - well I am sure the constitutional court may have something to say about that. We've already decided that same sex peeps can get married, well why wouldn't a bunch of people be able to be defined as a family?

So by the same rights if you own a gun you should be charged with murder. If its up to you whether you kill someone or not - the gun has the potential. :confused:

You dont have to.
Q: How is a TV set “denatured” so that a TV licence is not required?

A: Removal of a television set’s "tuner" renders it incapable of receiving any TV signal and, consequently, exempt from the need to be licensed. Written notice to the SABC of such denaturing must be supported by documentary proof in the form of a letter/invoice/receipt from a reputable TV repairer or installer. A R300.00 payment must accompany such application to the SABC, after which an authorised agent will be despatched to inspect the applicant’s TV equipment.

hmmm - they are getting really silly now. makes me sick to think that we are required to pay for the crap they broadcast everyday. They should be paying us to watch tv.!
 
It will be a cold day in hell before I pay SABC for taking out my tuner card...Grubby little money hands...that's what this is..Who needs tv on cellphones anyway with the kind of crap their showing? This "African" flavour doesn't work for me sorry...

all though it boils me blood too, you are not paying for what they broadcast you paying for the right to have a device that can receive any broadcast
