Neotel NeoGo put to the test

rpm, yet again a FAIL article from "Staff Writer".

You had the device, you did tests, yet you do not test latency, packet loss etc?

Why?

I can understand your frustration with a lack of technical information, but we are sometimes under time constraints which means that we can only focus on the more general aspects of a service. If one wants to do true in-depth testing it can take many hours and we simply don’t have the resources to dedicate to this.

I am sure the guys in the Neotel forum can conduct these tests for you…

Ah, ok :) Darn those time constrains.

Perhaps neotel knows that if they allow you to do an in depth analysis you will tear them appart (perhaps not).

As for asking them to do the tests for us, no thanks. I don't want lab results, I want real world results.

Eg, you got a link inside the building, but was it stable? Could you actually rely on that to do anything, or will it be quicker to slit your wrists and end it rather than work on a latency dependent website?

One of the major factors when you consider a wireless connection is stability and reliability.

How about someone from Neotel contact me and I'll test it "PROPERLY" for you guys... and I don't mind posting all the bits of technical information for you all to see and judge.

Like they say peeps, if you want to do something properly, you have to do it yourself.

I think he was referring to the guys in the MyBB Neotel forum, not people who work for Neotel. Those guys are always talking about Neotel, heck back when I was interested in Neotel I used to frequent it, ahh my innocent youth.

I'm sure one of them will be using it and will be happy to do a few tests for you.

Could be wrong, but that was my take on it.

The NeoGo product did start a challenge for other "mobile broadband solutions"

See

for some thoughts.

One could expect some changes in the market over the next few months.

At the moment my company has placed "hold" for a month on a number of new contracts to connect people working from home - waiting for the impact of the NeoGo to filter through in special offers etc from iBurst/VC/MTN.

Hi Pilgrim

It is difficult to comment on stability and reliability because we only tested the service for short periods of time in each location. When I tested it (I only did part of the testing) the service performed fairly well and I could surf the web without any significant problems. In-building signal strength was poor, but I could still open websites and download email without any hassles.

Why name something NeoGo when you just know it will be called NoGo by the first dissatisfied customer????

I've had a few people ask me to contact the Neotel rep and ask him if I could get access to this device myself and test it - I've sent him a PM, I'll let you guys know in the Neotel forum if I do get access to it and I'll post whatever you guys want me to.

Thanks Gdiza

Are you based in Cape Town?

At least they are making progress on getting USB devices out there. Hopefully they can get a move on and expand coverage.

For now I can only offer to do tests 100km out of coverage:D.

...

At R 239 for 1.5 GB the NeoGo service is effectively priced at R159 per GB. This is cheaper than iBurst’s R 199 per GB, Vodacom and MTN’s R 195 per GB and Telkom’s R 175 per GB for its 7.2 Mbps HSDPA offering.
Painstakingly obvious but only thought about it now. With out of bundle Neotel 1G = R80 vs. Vodacom 1G = R1200

Where is neotel pre paid data in the que?

:erm: Not sure if I understand this. According to the V4me site, MyGig 1 basic (3.6 Mbps) is R 289 and MyGig 1 advanced (7.2 Mbps) is R 389. Is the pricing as indicated in the article only for contract customers?

I was also wondering about the VC and MTN prices. On a 2GB bundle the price is R389 --> ~ R195/GB. But the price differs per GB on each bundle size.

One of the things I would like to test if I get access to this device is to drive around and sit on a mini laptop with this device and see how it works :D

At R239 for 1.5GB data only, the first GB is quite expensive: It is R159 for that first GB, and it is tied to a 24 month contract.

Only after that, the cost per GB drops... to around R80 per GB.

The monthly first GB is double the OOB rate.

I cannot understand why the 1st 1.5GB must be so expensive. Neoflex 5GB is R80 per GB from the first GB.
