Cape Town - Newly appointed Sharks Director of Coaching, Brendan Venter, will continue in his role of Technical Director at English club, Saracens.
Venter will therefore have a limited role to play in the on-field coaching side of things, with a head coach set to be appointed down the line.
Pretoria - The Blue Bulls have confirmed the departure of scrumhalf Jano Vermaak and flank Dewald Potgieter to France and Japan respectively.
Potgieter decided not to renew his contract which expires at the end of the current Super Rugby competition and instead will join up with the Yamaha Rugby Club in Japan, whilst Vermaak has asked to be released from his contract to join Toulouse in France.
Vermaak’s request to leave after the completion of the Super Rugby tournament will be discussed by the Bulls, as his contract only expires at the end of October 2013.
According to Xander Janse van Rensburg, the Bulls' High Performance Manager, Potgieter, who played in 58 Currie Cup, 63 Super Rugby matches and represented South Africa in six Tests and two tour matches, decided to rather go overseas to experience a different lifestyle and culture.
"We had numerous talks with Jano and at one stage it looked successful, but he finally decided to accept the Toulouse offer.
"We are very sad to lose these two players, as they have massive experience and are part of our leadership core, but one cannot compete with the exchange rate at the moment," Janse van Rensburg said.
Meanwhile, the Bulls have also announced that number of other players have renewed their contracts.
Current Springbok squad members Arno Botha and JJ Engelbrecht have signed on until 2016, while Louis Fouchè, Hencus van Wyk, Jono Ross, Basil Short and Deon Stegmann have signed until 2015, with Handrè Pollard signing on until 2017.
A number of players currently playing for the Junior Springboks in France has also penned extensions.
Flanker Roelof Smit, prop Andrew Beerwinkel and lock Jannes Kirsten signed on till 2015, while current Junior Boks captain, Ruan Steenkamp, signed on till 2014.
Janse van Rensburg says that talks are on-going to sign flanker Jacques du Plessis, who is currently contracted till 2014, for another couple of years.
"It is great to see the vote of confidence in the company and our structures and teams by so many leading players," Janse van Rensburg said.
Engelbrecht indicated that enjoyment as well as the drive to win tournaments made his decision an easy one.
"I am very happy in Pretoria, where a great work ethic and professional outlook is paramount.
" I feel I have developed so much as a player since joining the Bulls and want to keep on improving, something I know will happen here.
"The coaches here are brilliant and one can really develop as a player and as a person," Engelbrecht said.
Cape Town - New Sharks CEO John Smit turned down Brumbies coach Jake White in favour of Brendan Venter to take over the coaching reins at the Durban side.
According to a report on the Beeld website, White and former England coach Clive Woodward were interested in the coaching position. Both White and Woodward have World Cup winners medals as coaches, White with the Springboks in 2007 and Woodward with England in 2003.
Smit instead opted to appoint Venter as Director of Rugby. Smit and Venter worked together during the former Bok skipper's stint at English club, Saracens.
"I was very excited about what I saw from Brendan at Saracens," said Smit.
Smit also revealed that the relationship between him and outgoing Sharks coach John Plumtree is tense. Plumtree will lead the side until the completion of this year's Super Rugby competition.
"I had to break the news to him next to the field like a teacher. I still view Plum as a very good coach, but I feel sometimes as head coach you fall behind regarding your direct involvement. He also maybe didn't receive the necessary support from the leadership at the very top.
"I also felt it was needed for the players to experience something different. We need something new in the manner in which we play, the way we manage our players and a uniform playing style with all our teams.
"We need a rugby renewal.
Smit said he still hopes he and Plumtree can talk things out. "It will be bad if we walk past each other in Umhlanga Rocks in 10 years' time and we can't even look each other in the eye and greet one another."
Thought White committed himself to the Brumbies?
In any case Brendan from the sounds of things will work more in the background like Solly for the Kings. They still lookking for a coach AFAIK
Cape Town - Former Sharks flank Brad MacLeod-Henderson is the favourite to fill the head coach position of the Durban-based team, according to a report in The Mercury.
New Sharks CEO John Smit recently appointed Brendan Venter as Director of Rugby at the union.
But Smit said there would also be a head coaching position, which is expected to be filled by MacLeod-Henderson.
Current Sharks coach John Plumtree will leave the team after the completion of the Super Rugby competition after his contract was not renewed.
With Venter performing the role of overseeing all coaching proceedings at the union, MacLeod-Henderson is expected to take charge of the Currie Cup team. The 37-year-old is the current Director of Rugby at Hilton College.
He is also the assistant coach of the Sharks Under-21 team. The head coach for that team is Sean Everitt and, in an about turn, he is tipped to be MacLeod-Henderson's assistant during the Currie Cup.
This would see current Sharks assistant coaches Grant Bashford and Hugh Reece-Edwards likely make way.
He is a bit unknown on the coaching terrain. Sharks player 1998-2003, then he went to play in Europe. He coached two colleges, one being in the national club divisions.
Ah okay, thanks for the info. Better idea than White or Woodward?![]()
Cape Town - Western Province prop Chris Heiberg has signed a deal to play for Australian Super Rugby franchise, the Force.
Heiberg, who played for WP in this year's Vodacom Cup, will join the Perth side on October 1. He was also on the Stormers' bench for their last two Super Rugby matches against the Reds and Kings, but didn't get game time.
His agent, Nina Rossouw of Union Sports Group, confirmed to Die Burger that the 28-year-old signed a deal which will keep him in Australia until the end of the 2016 season.
He will join fellow South Africans Wilhelm Steenkamp and Sias Ebersohn. Steenkamp signed a deal with the Force last week, while Ebersohn started playing for the Australians this season.
