Here in Florida, Johannesburg my LTE stick tries to connect to this network:
Network: 655 14 4G
which seems to kick out the MTN 4G I usually use.
It is listed as "allowed" but provides only "limited service"
Now MCC 655 is South Africa but MNC 14 is not assigned to any provider what...
I am based in the UK living in a semi-rural area which I have managed to squeeze 3.5Mb out of ADSL until they introduced fibre to the exchange, not anywhere near me and now I struggle to get to 2Mb and sometime drops a lot further.
I am just learning about 4g after getting another adsl router...

I have noticed of late, that SMSes are only delivered to my phone (Sony Z2) when I turn on my mobile data. e.g. I only turned on my mobile data at 10:12am today. Several FNB inContact SMSes as well as an SMS from the voicemail service were then delivered at that time.

What happens is they wait 4-5 hours to let you know you are approaching the limit of your data package. In that time, particularly with 4G, you can easily chew up multiple Gigabytes on their out-of-package rate of R1 per MB.
But you can add a voluntary limit and cap your spend right?
