Telkom just upgraded the exchange supplying Verwordpark Alberton and I spoke to a techy and he said that 10Meg equipment is installed and that they will switch me over the next day but nothing yet and its a week later

One thing I found with Telkom is that there exists a huge communications gape between the Techy at your home, the call centre, and their tech department. They are definitely not on the same page.

Ja, well, no, fine, why does that sound familiar ... :(

This service can not be converted to 10Mbps Fastest DSL at this stage. Please check again in future as we are continually upgrading the network.

sigh sigh :(

Parow - 10Mb OK

Since I am 4.7Km from the exchange (Plattekloof II) and the attenuation is very high my download speed did not change from before, that is 3Mb! The upload went from 500kb to 700kb. Obviously the only Telkom box in the area without a DSLAM, is mine. I have ask them 2-3 times to put a DSLAM on the street but they won't. What is even more frustrating is that a friend 200m away is on a DSLAM and syncs perfectly @ 10Mb., you must be 5Km or more from the exchange for them to CONSIDER putting a DSLAM. It is quiet ridiculous that if I want a good line I have to sell the house and move one or two street away!

You lucky bugger... I am in Plattekloof I (Hendrik Verwoerd Rd) on 021 939- but the checker says "not available". Still battling along at an average of around 3.2Mbps.
Are you on the 939 exchange?

What are the fastest available speeds along Currie Road Durban.

I have met a Telkom techy outside an exchange on Currie road, and he indicated that all 031201xxxx are on the 10mbps DSL exchange so 10mbps should be capable.

Please can some1 advise me if they have 10mbps in the area mentioned or similar exchange

re: "...My work ADSL line which is on the exact same exchange as my home line (031-267 ****) has already been upgraded. I don't think even Hellkom know what they are doing..."

I understand your frustration, but let's analyse this: There is such a thing as "return on investment" and "capacity" and all good specials come with a "while stocks last" clause.

Considering that businesses pay more for ADSL and use more bandwidth than a home user, its logical that they will be prioritised when something with real business benefit (like doubling adsl speeds) comes along. If I was running a business I'd protect high-revenue streams and I'm sure you would too.

Telecommunications equipment are modular. If there is one 10Mbps shelf at full capacity and a prefectly functional 4Mbps shelf, it does not make business sense to junk the 4Mbps shelf unless I have spare capacity on the 10 Mbps shelf... especially if its a free upgrade. Hence its quite possible to have no capacity even if there are 10meg lines in the same exchange area.

I know Telkom-bashing is nice, but let's restrict the blame to the things that is really their fault.

Ps.
I also suffer from "no 10Mbps available" syndrome...but they're going to run out of 4Mbps shelfs at some stage and then I'll get 10Mbps too ;-)

Lol .. Telkom's inability and unwillingness to provide 10Mbps to more than a miniscule fraction of users is of course 'their fault'. Who else do you think is responsible for building out Telkom's DSL network other than Telkom itself? And sorry, if you make big press releases about an 'upgrade' which is in fact scarcely available, then it's also your fault for getting negative flak as a result, if you raise hopes, and then disappoint.

The real problem is Telkom has tried to offer what they are labelling a significant upgrade in the media, what is actually only a tiny investment into their DSL network. I.e. they're trying to improve their value offering but they're not willing to spend money on it. The limited DSLAMs already supported the higher speeds but they never offered it before because they can't guarantee it for technical reasons (e.g. distance from exchange) ... by upgrading only the backhaul and then turning this option on they can offer more 'value' with basically no or little new DSLAM infrastructure (at least, not more than they were 'planning on putting in anyway'), no new ports, nothing that can upgrade all the pathetic 384 lines etc. .. i.e. it's their only option to look like they have a better network short of actually spending money. Others here say things like 'why not increase the 384 minimum' - well that involves spending REAL money which they'd rather spend on 8ta because in the mobile arena they can charge massive per-GB rates.

"My work ADSL line which is on the exact same exchange as my home line (031-267 ****) has already been upgraded"

There can be multiple exchanges per area, and the distance from the exchange, as well as port availability, can influence availability. If the home line is several km further from the same exchange that could cause something like this.

Seems as if Durban is not a high priority area for the 10mb lines? I am in North beach and no luck here. Was patiently waiting a couple of months - but still nada!

been bumped up to 10meg in bergbron.. running off the newlands exchange in jhb. only syncing at 8 meg as i am a bit far from the exchange but all smiles :)

Why are there only a handful of respondents to the survey?

I was 1 of the 1st people to be upgraded. Since then my noise margins have steadly got worse. So everytime that happens Telkom has slowly dropped my line speeds. So that before the upgrade I was synching at 4 Mbps and now I am only synching at 2 Mbps. Just more proof that Telokm's infrastructure is actually getting worse

What number are you on, i managed to get 10 meg on the 031368 Beach 2 exchange iirc.

Agreed though im in Morningside with a healthy number of residential business/offices and after repeated attempts the Telkom call centre guys havent got a clue
