3G/HSPA/LTE Routers

Thanks Morkhans, probably does make sense to have an interface where the user can input his own USSD codes but would still probably want to list the codes for each provider on that page for users (like me) that don't know the codes. We should have feedback tomorrow from TP-Link which I'll post when we get it.

Cool. The problem I see with that is if codes change or get updated it's going to take a while to find it's way into the firmware. So perhaps a link from the router to a page on the TPLink site that can be regularly updated is a better choice?

I am all for USSD support!

How cool is this?? A dealer collaborating with the manufacturer to make a product better. I also have the TP Link MR 3420. Was one of the first on mybroadband to get it.
Very happy with it. It just WORKS!!
 
So I ordered my MR3220 on saturday. It shipped this morning and the courier brought it just now (17:25ish). (amazing!)

I've set it up on Cell C (aka selecting south africa and cell c and plugging in the modem). Got it set up with my TL1043N (the ultimate N/gigabit router) with the MR3220 on the WAN side of the TL1043N. Wireless completely disabled on the MR3220, don't need it but nice to have it there in case.
Every thing is working as it should. :) Signal level a bit lower on the Cell C modem (around 61%) so might just use a usb extension.

So, to summarise, VERY happy with TP-LINK and Uniterm Direct! (and Cell C actually)
 
@Uniterm Direct / Kernel

I purchased the TP-Link MR3420 router last Friday. It works perfectly with my Cell C Huawei E1820 modem. This router is an excellent purchase !

I also have a Vodafone ZTE K4505-Z modem, but this modem is not supported by the router. This modem is not on the compatibility list for the router.
I downloaded/installed the latest firmware for the router etc. but the modem is still not recognised by the router.
I know of quite a few other Vodacom users who would like to obtain this router for use with their Vodafone ZTE K4505-Z modems. Is it possible for you guys to contact TP-Link and request them to look into providing compatibility for this modem with their router ?

Recently I contacted TP-Link about adding USSD code support in their next firmware release for the MR3420 Router this was their response:

"Dear Marc,

Thank you very much for your e-mail requesting information about our product.

Until now, we haven’t promoted a firmware that will meet your application.

But I will forward your requirements to my senior engineer and If we have got a new firmware with that function I’ll inform you as soon as possible.

Maybe if they receive multiple requests for USSD support, they may action the request more speedily

Hi Guys

May I please ask that if you do have any technical queries or requests that you send it to us (Uniterm Direct) and not directly to TP-Link, We have an excellent relationship with them and chances are we'll be able to get this support added if we're able to motivate it to them (which I believe we were able to do), sending them multiple emails for the same thing is not going to get them to add the support.

@Ahmed, the K4505-Z is in-fact supported, we actually flew one to TP-Link so that they could get this particular model supported, it is possible that you've not loaded the correct firmware, send an email to [email protected] and he'll sort you out.
 
BTW, we have more TL-MR3420's landing today at about 1pm if anyone is interested, unfortunately only taking orders until 12pm 23/12/2010.
 
Just picked up my TL-WR1043ND* from the Uniterm CPT offices. Had a good chat to Jason. Got it up and running with no issues. I must say the interface is very nicely laid out and easy to understand. Looks like a very good product and I'm happy with my purchase!

*Note: Does not support 3G Modems, I wanted an AP with Gigabit ports.

That with the original TP-Link firmware? I ask as I've only ever bought 'em with DD-WRT preloaded and have *NO* idea what their firmware is like!

Well, not with the stock one at any rate! But (and this is for the pr0n*) look at this OpenWrt WR1043ND page on which there is NO mention of USB 3G but they say to look at this one ..so, at least with OpenWrt it may be possible. ;)

*hacking MOAR RAM onto it? ..whooaaa, dude! :D

Original Firmware, yes.

I have looked at the OpenWRT firmware and it certainly does look like it would be possible to get a USB modem working. Of course loading this means goodbye warranty. When the honeymoon phase is over I might take the plunge :)

That RAM hack is probably beyond my soldering abilities :p

Which is why, at the JHB branch at least I avail myself of the PRE-installed DD-WRT or OpenWrt option ..for a whole R50 more. That, seeing as THEY did the firmware mod, doesn't invalidate your warranty.
That RAM hack is probably beyond my soldering abilities :p

Tempted, oh sooo tempted ..and what a *koff* reason to descend on Communica and find the tiniest tip for my soldering iron (and, of course) other stuff. :D Still, it comes down to finding the memory chips (time to start looking closely at the /var SODIMM sticks I have lying around...)

Guys, have feedback from TP-Link and they're going to try and get the USSD support added, I need some help though... can I get a list of some of the 3G routers that currently support this? and if possible some screen shots of the Router displaying the balance / USSD? if you could email this through to [email protected]

I don't believe there are any routers that presently do this. If you get this working you're sure to have a competitive advantage ;)

Where it does presently work is with an application on your PC like Mobile Partner and MDMA. It also works using scripts in Linux. I can give you screen shots of those if it will help?

Ah OK, I was under the impression that there were routers on the market that did this not only software, nonetheless I'm still going to push them to add this, its a nice feature.

I dont think screen shots of a Linux shell script or the likes will help, lets see how far they get with the info we've provided them.
 
Morkhans, on second thought, could you maybe send me some screen shots of the balance query from the desktop software? Would at least give the TP-Link chaps a visual idea of what we need. If you could just email it straight to [email protected]

I know the ePoynt definitely does do USSD, but not suitable for Cell-C until they get UMTS 900 modules:

For some reason I thought the Dovado routers mentioned on the first page of this thread could do USSD, but after looking through their specs I can't see any evidence of this.
