- Downgrade as their speed deteriorates

Seems like the way to go with these ISP's, is:

After some investigations by us and MTN we found that you are actually outside of Fixed LTE coverage and because of that you are connecting to a tower more than 3km away and that tower is quite busy traffic wise so the experience will not be as expected.
We have to investigate further to see why the service was offered when you are outside of coverage as that is a mistake on our side.

Please note that our MTN Fixed LTE will be discontinued for new signups soon. Due to the nature of LTE and the finite resources available on this technology, we have outgrown what can be offered on LTE.
In the near future, Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE and 5G will be migrated to a new service called Afrihost Pure Wireless. We will only sell these packages with 5G router whether or not you have 5G or not and if you are not in 5G coverage, it will work on 4G/LTE.
This is to migrate most of our traffic onto the 5G network for better speeds, latency and reliability.
Once the change is completed, if a client signs up for a SIM-only package, it will only work on the 5G approved router list or a 4G router that has been used on the MTN network for fixed LTE before. If it's a new 4G router, it will no longer be supported.

Those uncapped packages I see on your pure LTE offering make me a bit nervous. what speeds are you hoping to achieve, what is the FUP, and what speeds do you drop down to when throttled?
These will be the FUP for the uncapped packages. We will adjust them as needed but yeah the goal is to get clients off LTE and on to 5G as you may know that is what MTN said. Get your subscribers onto 5G asap.
Uncapped Thresholds and Throttling
- 50Mbps - Subject to a monthly threshold of 150GB. Once you’ve reached your monthly data limit, your connection speed will be limited to 4Mbps for the remainder of the month.
- 100Mbps
- Once you reach 250GB usage, your connection speed will be limited to 20Mbps.
- Once you reach 500GB usage, your connection speed will be limited to 10Mbps.
- Once you reach the threshold of 1TB, your connection speed will be limited to 1Mbps for the remainder of the month.
- Wireless Plus
- Once you reach 250GB usage, your connection speed will be limited to 50Mbps.
- Once you reach 500GB usage, your connection speed will be limited to 20Mbps.
- Once you reach the threshold of 1TB, your connection speed will be limited to 4Mbps for the remainder of the month.

Thanks for the info! I'm just trying to get them off 2G/3G at the moment, it's proving an uphill battle

Will those of us on the fixed LTE packages be able to migrate to a 5G package with our existing SIMs or would new sims need to be issued?

5G is more of a provisioning thing as opposed to a new sim.
All exisiting packages will be migrated to the 5G packages. Clients will be notified soon about this change. Nothing really changes except for the packages available to you and the changes to some Fair use policies.
The major changes will be for new signups especially sim only. We will require a 5G router. LTE is getting more and more congested and 5G is not being adopted as fast as we see clients still opt for 4G/LTE even if they have 5G coverage.

Ok cool, makes sense, I currently have a Fixed LTE package, and an unsed 5G router lying around, could I go and stick my fixed LTE sim into my 5G router now, or do I need to wait for the migration to occur?
Just worried about my SIM being blocked, the 5G router is on the MTN approved list.
What 5G router do you have?

I've tested many of the approved routers available, and this one is by far my favourite! It's a pity that it was swapped to the MC888, which doesn't have an external antenna port

So which one is it? Is the tower too busy, or am I outside coverage?
Check my speedtest here over the past few months, they will say otherwise, I was getting 50Mbps for the past 3 months.
It was only since MTN and Afrihost did the emergency maintenance end of last month, due to some rogue firmware update, that I started experiencing the speed and latency deteriorate.
So my speedtests indicate that your tower is too busy, as sometimes they are at 50Mbps, but other times they are a 5th of that.

If the goal was truly to encourage conversion to 5G, Afrihost wouldn't have changed the 1TB FUP policy across all 5G plans to this new, more restrictive model. I was about to sign up, but I decided to go with MTN Seesh instead. It’s cheaper, faster, unthrottled, at least for the basic plans. This change seems to work against the push to get clients onto 5G, and is exact replica of LTE Policy.
Oh wow I only see this now. They made the FUP even worse while keeping the same price. Throttling the 100mbit package to 20mbit once 250gb is reached is so unnecessary. Anyone know a better deal for R599 for LTE?

This is terrible. I switched over to 5G last month and was incredibly happy with the results:
Since late June, my connection has significantly deteriorated. I’m consistently receiving speeds of only 8 to 9 Mbps—far below acceptable standards. This issue has persisted for over a month despite multiple support tickets and line resets.
Ironically, my old ADSL setup delivered a stable 10 Mbps, making it a more reliable alternative than the current service.
Furthermore, switching the router to 5G-only results in a complete loss of internet access, suggesting that 5G connectivity has inexplicably become unavailable.
Why dont they then drop all the packages and just have on 10Mbps package. Im paying for a premium package and not even getting the speed of the lowest for R399.
