Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

What is a refurbished router?
I think refurbished means secondhand i.e. routers that were used by customers on a contract previously and have now been returned and are being resold. You will have to contact WebAfrica about whether you can purchase one of them without a SIM. Otherwise you could look at one of their SIM options and see how long you need to subscribe before you can cancel if you want to use a different cheaper service. They might also still offer a free to use router that has to be returned when you cancel the service if you would prefer that option.

At the end of last month an unannounced Windows 10 update used around 4GB of my topup bundle!

You can request a copy of your hourly data usage via e-mail from the Client Zone by clicking on the usage graph (view detailed usage history) and then clicking on the Send Logs via E-mail button on the Data Usage Graphs screen. The file is in CSV format. You can usually trace the source of the problem from there. Leaving CNN running in a tab in the background last month also did some serious damage when it randomly started streaming while the PC was left unattended ...
Metered connection. Its there for a reason. Use it.

I've switched from Supersonic to Afrihost MTN and its an absolute joy to have something as basic, as a functional Client Portal! (And on top of that I've also seen a slight speed increase.)

I was able to easily upgrade my package within seconds. I can check my data balance and I have multiple top-up options. (I always thought that this was the bare minimum to expect from any ISP - apparently not.)

With Supersonic I had to use TWO portals. A "new" portal to check my balance and an "old" portal to top-up.

Anyways, I'm glad to be back with Afrihost! (I unfortunately had to jump ship when RAIN turned to sh_t.)

No complaints myself really, bar the very infrequent few minute downtime once every few weeks perhaps.
On the ball, responsive support....and most of all super LTE/A speeds via their MTN package. 50-100+ Mbps 24x7.
YMMV tho.

Never looked back from dRain. $$%^%$% useless - and don't even start on their signal and speeds....sub 1Mb at best for entire 1 year I was forced to be with them (contract) and at 2 diff properties.

How did you do the switch? Did you need to wait for your contract with Supersonic to be finished?

My contract with Supersonic is month-to-month. I only need to give 30days notice.

I had to get a new simcard from Afrihost.

Is there a link somewhere I can check out the products/prices?

Busy looking for an LTE solution atm. TIA :)

Here are the current Afrihost prices. Personally I would start on the 30GB+30GB package and then upgrade to a larger package from the ClientZone if necessary. You need to have a Huawei B525, B612, B618 or a ZTE MF286 router to use the SIM Only packages. You could look in the MyBroadband Classifieds, Carbonite, OLX, Gumtree etc. for a cheap secondhand model if required.

Pure LTE (MTN) SIM Only Packages
30GB Anytime 30GB Night time - R199.00pm
60GB Anytime 60GB Night time - R349.00pm
100GB Anytime 100GB Night time - R549.00pm
150GB Anytime 150GB Night time - R749.00pm
200GB Anytime 200GB Night time - R949.00pm
300GB Anytime 300GB Night time - R1349.00pm
500GB Anytime 500GB Night time - R1949.00pm
Uncapped Anytime Data - R2949.00pm

@Solarion: If you already have an LTE capable device (cell phone, MiFi etc.) which is not approved for the MTN network then it will be cheaper to go with one of the Telkom 61 day prepaid bundles. They are only slightly more expensive than the Afrihost/MTN Fixed LTE bundles (refer to the attachment below for prices).

For example if you purchased the 61 day 60GB+60GB bundle for R459 and split it over two months, it would cost you R230 per month while the SIM only Afrihost FLTE 30GB+30GB would cost R199 per month but a new router would cost at least R1500 or an additional R100~R150 per month. Telkom sells the TP-Link TL-M7200 MiFi for R600 which is a cheaper option than a router but this device is not suitable for MTN FLTE - only for other services.

WebAfrica are also selling some refurbished B525 and B618 routers for R999. I'm not sure whether you can purchase the routers outright or you are required to take a SIM only deal from them to qualify but one of their bundles might also be worth considering. Their cheapest MTN FLTE 50GB+50GB bundle costs R319 per month which is a bit more than the cheapest Afrihost bundle but the saving on the cost of a suitable router could make it worthwhile. You would need to contact them to get the details. The B618 would be my choice if you can purchase it for R999. Just click on the Refurbished Routers Tab to get more information.

Anyone else having issues with MTN Fixed LTE through Afrihost? I have no data throughput, though my router seems to connect to the network and is assigned an IP address. The IP address on the router matches the one on ClientZone.

It stopped working yesterday around 4pm. I'm in Lenasia, JHB. Did multiple reboots, but still nothing. I have 150GB+ of anytime data still available on the package, so being capped is not the issue.

Afrihost network status page for fixed wireless only reports issues on the Rain network. Nothing about MTN fixed LTE.

Nevermind. This is resolved. I actually WAS capped. Got confused between the peak/off-peak data. On ClientZone I'm usually used to seeing a red/orange? dot next to the product to indicate you are capped. But with the fixed LTE, if you still have night time data, it will still show as a green dot, even if all your peak data is finished.
