Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

Yes, also see 4G+.
But that does not make for faster upload or download speeds

This is what afrihost/MTN looks like now. And the problem for the past few weeks. WTF?

Check out my Speedtest result! How fast is your internet? https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/8444286806

What's wrong with Afrihost & MTN (rosebank, cape town)
The fixed wireless is just dead

Morning,

Apologies for the issues experienced.

I'm working with Noc and we are engaging with MTN to investigate the slow speeds during the evening peak from about 5pm to around 10pm.

I am also experiencing the same issue. Of course they did their "research" but nothing has changed. Same issue. Same speeds.

Hi,

We are working with MTN on the issue.

Between 5pm and 10pm we see packetloss continuously increasing at our JHH and CPT handover switches. Once I have any further issues I will advise accordingly.

Apologies for the issues experienced.

Thanks for that. At least this is more detailed update and it's a known issue. Does this happen to all MTN users or only Afrihost clients?

@AfriNatic since December I have an open ticket with MTN on bad latency and speeds. I had to escalate to MTN directly as this is an issue with their network and towers, but since Jan nothing has happened it's 6 months later, I have been promised a lot and gotten nothing. Is there someone I can talk to directly? 3 neighbors are now also having the same issue.

Also experiencing same issue here in Cape Town. So frustrating. Makes me want to move to Vodascum, something I promised myself I will never go back to but testing with a voda SIM, streaming is 100% better.

Ironically when I initially tested, MTN was MUCH better than Rain or vodacom. Now... they aren't much better

Depends of where you are. In my case MTN is better than VC or Rain since the Rain coverage drops off when you enter the town and VC does not have uncapped fixed LTE.

Not dissing either - had my 082 number since 1999 and my data SIM is Rain.

Mine seems fine, day or night.

Peak time, right now :

But I've set my Afri / MTN to cancel end of this month, because already signed up to Axxess / Telkom - double my monthly data allocation, for only R50 more ; or, could triple it for R100 more.

This is also recent Telkom speedtest by comparison (but I still think the MTN one is more stable / predictable, as speeds tend to fluctuate more for me, on Telkom)

Nice, only problem being telkom is pure evil and I'll rather go without than with that piece of ....... network ever again in my life. They ruined the 90s and 2000s completely.

The way I look at it is, I'm going after the best overall deal possible, and if they're currently offering it, I'm prepared to use them to my advantage.

I'll just as easily switch back if it becomes worth my while, and / but don't think MTN or Vodacom are angels either.

Curious to know as well.

For now it looks to affect our clients only on both MTN fixed LTE and Air mobile.

We have 2 main hand overs with MTN. JHB and CPT. MTN does load balancing between these 2 points and hand traffic to Afrihost network core at these locations. We see the loss start earlier in JHB and then later in CPT but it seems like the MTN APN is not affected.

We have escalated the matter to MTN for further investigation as we have gone through all our hardware and can't find any issues.

@AfriNatic - Thank you for the feedback and explanation. Although I have to say that it's extremely frustrating when you get home in the evening and the connectivity is sooooo slow. I hope you find a workable solution soon.

We have found the possible cause for the issue.

We are working with MTN on a solution and once I have an ETA I will advise.

Apologies for the issues experienced.
