Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 3

Just a quick query guys

I'm currently sitting on a 10mb connection (but since Telkom upgraded most peoples connection speed I'm running at 12.4mbs)
But according to Telkom's Coverage site (https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/ucm/) 10mbs is the maximum that I can receive.
However, my neighbors connection is sitting on 20mbs. Bare in mind that we both connect to the same exchange, can someone explain why I' wouldn't qualify for a 20mb? Is there any other way for me to determine my maximum speed?

why are you only implementing fixes now if the problems have been going on for months already after denying that there was a problem for month after month leaving us with internet that only works properly for 2 days before it conks out

I think the bigger problem here is the lack of feedback to your clients. As far as I can tell this thread is the only place that you have communicated that there was an issue in the south.

We have been troubleshooting and working with clients on a case by case basis, not just on my broadband, but across all platforms. We have also been working with - and feeding back to our Network Team who have been working equally hard to manage performance on the network. Maintenance on the network started happening last night and we're already seeing improved performance since then, which I mentioned this morning. :)

Hey there!:) Your neighbour could be linking to a different DP than you. Please PM me your line number and I'll check what is available to you definitively, right away.

As mentioned before, network demand is a fluid thing and has to be managed before any decisions can be made whether to upgrade, run maintenance, or whatever. We have had to go through extensive testing with our clients as well as management of IPC before the decision was made to schedule maintenance. This has already started happening, so we'll value your continued feedback. :)

Hey @AfriFella just a quick question:

In the ClientZone when selecting my Data Package and looking at the usage stats, is the Free-Time Data listed there combined since signing up 2 months ago? I seem to be averaging around 450-500GB p/m according the usage stats, but Free-Time Data is showing 830GB.

Also, I assume the detailed data usage history does not include Free-Time Data?

Please clarify! Thanks.

Not sure where that came from (..wired into gigabit switch into router)

So, back to my Jhb-Cpt-Lisbon question :) Or is it leaving the country at hop 9

Hey man, this is my trace to Twitch right now from CPT

It does seem to route via Lisbon but that is probably their typical EU routing, not specific to Twitch. Might have to do with their international carrier route...

There's a bug, freetime shows double.

Do you have an Afrigreen account? It's possible that your Free-Time reporting could be reporting double because of this... But drop me a PM with your username and I'll confirm.

It's my hops 9 and 10 that my question is about. Naming seems local, numbers not :) looked at a few other Euro targets, they all have that strange (for me at least) hops 9 and 10

AfriFella, got confirmation that my area is capable of up 20 mbps from TelkomZA. As you guys manage my line - can you assist with upgrading me to 10 mbps?
Also, apparently we have been moved to msan equipment....

EDIT: AfriFella, you got pm.

I also wondered the same thing, in my other traces I see the same as you, minus a few JHB hops ofcourse.

The naming is kind of misleading when troubleshooting, but just judging from the latency we can assume it's an overseas link :s

They are international. The naming has been wrong for years (as long as I can remember).

Any AH rep able to assist?

It's definitely an international hop. :) The naming of these routers can often be a little misleading and it's always best to look at the IP addresses instead. What's shown in your initial trace on hop 9 is where the packet is coming from, not where the packet ended up.

To be honest, I'm not sure why it's reported this way, as Deathcore's trace seems more straight forward, but it might also be because he is tracing directly from Cape Town, where your trace is taking that extra hop from Joburg.
