If you really wanted to be clear and transparent about it, you'd call your products "Youtube access" and not "internet access". As it is now, your throttling policy means that you will stop me from getting work done because my neighbour wants to watch a video of a cat on Youtube.

I think we had a chat about this at some point. Your neighbour's usage may affect the network, but your real time service is always preserved. In some instances, like today, we have to fight a little harder to preserve latencies than normal, but in general you always have full realtime service. To my knowledge no other ISP offers this distinction - I could be wrong though. This is the norm with US ISPs and in the EU, according to the experts we consulted when we designed our system.

Why are you arguing about this? It's not like your quotes, opinions and facts are gonna change the way Afrihost do things on their network. Why don't we just use this thread to do what the title says: Feedback, and not a What-I-think-you're-doing-wrong thread

Afri'okes have no obligation to respond beyond this article and the words did not make sense when said they do not shape on usage yet their aup defines a sliding scales which means it is defined on usage paterns, I did not once claim they shape more if you used a certain amount of gigs but I do claim they are meant to shape heavy users more and before low end users

Guys, it's not cool to attack other forumites who are giving their opinion. If you wanna vent about Afrihost, that's cool. But everyone has opinion, so like you get to have yours, let's give others the space to have their own and disagree with you. Cool, this is the point I want to bring across, we have been taught that a throttle is a complete slow down, that shape is protocols specific, uncapped is unlimited and throttled is capped. we have been taught to completely disregards an AUP and terms and conditions, we take advantage of every loop hole, eg will be to bypass a cancellation notice period.

we have been taught so wrong and I wish to open a few eyes here. I am glad you have seen the light and hopefully when you notice that you are shaped to 18% you will realize it is a rate limit and therefore it can only be described as throttle and not shaped

Well, if so, then you clearly forgot all about it But whether or not you think 'my realtime service' is 'preserved', the fact is that due to your throttling policies, if my neighbour is watching cats on Youtube, it will degrade my internet connectivity because you think that watching cats on Youtube is more important than whatever I use my internet connection for.

In case you missed it a couple of pages back...

FFS They (Afrihost) do not shape users individually like Mweb, they shape the network based on total load with prioritising certain services. Is that so hard to fathom?

You are again misquoting, a throttle can be protocol specific. even as far as server specific. you can throttle a hulu and leave youtube intact. I can assure you that ISPs have major control, yet there are always loopholes and are always exploited by a small %%

I think we're all getting a little upset here, and AfriGuy is just as human as everyone else. I can also see people on both sides od this debate taking refuge in support. I think we all need to dust ourselves off and move on.

I think you must remember that MyBB represent a small (but vocal) portion of our client base, but also a very particular segment of the internet using public. The rest of the moms and pops out there have very different needs and I actually had a chat with a gentleman today who was never aware that he has ever been shaped (even though he had been) becuase he only uses real time services and for the first time wanted to do a download when we were shaping heavily.

As I've said, we have several products to choose from to suit your needs. I think we have pretty much everyone covered and it's up to each client to decide what will work better for them.

I don't think that's at all what I'm talking about. I've said this before - labelling heavy users as "abusers" is a mistake. Some people have more bandwidth needs. But without them, we can't push for more capacity and more price cuts on bandwidth, which benefits everyone. They are also our clients, just as much as anyone else, and I'm happy to have them on our network.
