Afrihost Uncapped DSL Feedback

I got an update from our network team that they've identified a classification issue (which would affect shaping on shaped products) which may have contributed to poor experiences reported last night and the days preceding.

This has been fixed, and we expect performance to improve. We only fixed that around 10pm or just after last night. If the IPC upgrades go live, then we'll have tackled this from both sides to ensure our clients have the best experience :)

Thanks to everyone for their contribution and support :)

I'd still love to know why real-time service are being shaped.

I'd also love to know if this fabled extra capacity is going to make a difference soon. Like today.

My gut tells me we're going to see the shaping policies change soon. If we want to be unshaped and uncapped we're going to pay.

Real time services are not shaped and we don't aim to shape them at all. At the moment the closest we offer to Uncapped Unshaped is Business, however we do reserve the right to shape in extreme cases.

Not sure why you've used the term "fabled" here. We've announced here in an official capacity, so it's definitely going to happen :)

A useful tool is one that would let clients check if they are being shaped

This is something we used to have but it was on the MTN network when the shaping system was used in very different way. The new system is completely dynamic and shaping is applied in very different way, which we haven't been able to translate in the same visual way. While it may be possible to say when a user is being shaped, the degree and extent is the pedigree information we've like to communicate, and we haven't yet found a way to do this. We're still working on this with our developers, because we do want to have users in full control of their experience.

Good point. Is there really any difference between Home Uncapped, Premium Uncapped and Business Uncapped with the state the network is currently in? They are all being shaped (and I can't see a difference in the degree of shaping during congested periods either)

There is definitely a massive difference. Home Uncapped is also potentially throttled (based on usage) so it's a very different product.

Business should experience much lighter shaping than Premium, even in extreme demand scenarios. The idea is we'll shape Premium more aggressively so that Business is never shaped where possible, and only lightly shaped. Now that we also have a shaped Capped product, this will allow us to try to preserve the Business experience as much as possible.

So will we be seeing a improvement in performance by Friday? Streaming was terrible again last night, what is the last day for cancellation every month? Is there any point in having a business account if it performs the same as a premium uncapped account? I thought the whole point of business uncapped was to have priority on your network?

The classification error we discovered would have meant that traffic that should have been shaped was omitted and that would have put pressure on unshaped services during peak demand. I believe this will make a significant impact when we can effectively shape this traffic and secure unshaped performance for streaming, etc.

In terms of upgrades, it's always hard to give an exact ETA, but there is every possibility it could happen at any time, so we're definitely hoping for long before Friday.

Oooh, but I thought NOTHING WAS WRONG! Your customers doesn't know WHAT they are talking about, in AfriLand, "Our Broadband network is running like a bomb! Everything is copacetic and we’re good to GO!"

AMAZING how all these things only comes out NOW... Almost a YEAR later.

You, really need to start listening to your customers, and not disregarding everything that MULTIPLE people are complaining about.

Well let's see what happens, I have a small capped account elsewhere which I can use if things don't turn out well this weekend, I hope they do, otherwise my cancellation will be going in.

I do enjoy afrihost and they do deliver stellar service. but this is like a liberty stomach punch after a long romance!

I think I'm missing the reference here :(

I strongly believe the classification changes we've made will already have an impact, but in all likelihood the upgrade we've ordered will also kick in, so I think our clients will be getting a great network experience.

You should still be able to force it through, but it's not recommended if you're not shaped.

But currently there is no way to know if you are being shaped? using post #583 as a reference

So if you think you being shaped, you should force a turbocharge? even if you could be wasting due to network/line issues?

I have had a great experience with a Afrihost and recommended it to many until the extreme shaping issue started. Thanks for the feedback and I trust that it will all be resolved very soon.

As mentioned by Afriman, our developers are working on translating this into ClientZone. :)

Without wasting Turbocharge minutes, another way to check could be to switch over to a free 1GB Capped account and compare results.

Wouldn't that only inform you if you are being throttled, not shaped?

Keep us posted with your experience.

My experience is utterly sh*t, every evening from about 18:00 until late. When is this getting sorted?

Provided they can get to the ClientZone page......

...and, when (if...) you do eventually get there, you're told that everything's fine and in the green. Bloody disgrace...
