ATI 5850 with Intel Q9550

PM'd you back. Will be a nice opportunity to test xfire 5850's.

Ok so where are all the hardware brains here? I thought that I would have hundreds of answers by the morning? :)

No one have ANY clue!? sigh

:(

Brand might not matter but clocks warranty and cooling do affect performance - and that's what you pay the extra for. The twin frozr 260 could nearly hit 275 speeds and never warmed up beyond 60c. Try doing that with a stock palit 260 or so.

K warranty doesn't affect performance lol.... but ykwim. Not to mention certain brands cherrypick better components, ram etc.

Just a comment. Some of the cheaper brands like Force3D do have superior cooling compared to more expensive brands. For instance my Force3D HD4870 idles at 42 degrees and reaches 55 degrees max on load. Plus it's overclocked to 800/1100 from 750/900. Expensive is not always better, but it may make one feel better to have a more well known brand :)

I don't see how a q9550 could hold back any single gpu...
Have you done any real world benchmarks?

erm, FRAPS or a time demo or something?

can you reccommend some please. Im going to have to run them this evening...

Q9550 is a serious cpu. 965 will be faster but not so much to make such a dramatic difference. Does the 965 have ddr3 ram and if so how much? What speed is the PCI-E set to - 8x or 16x?

Try running Farcry2 extended timedemo if you have it - that's pretty reliable indicator of real world gaming performance.

Yea as you say not 2000 points better surely? When i had the i7 and amd 965 i ran 3dmark with my 9800gx2 and there only a 400 point difference.

Which resolutions were you both running at?

5850 uses less power than 4890 yes. It's 40nm vs 55.
