Cell C Network Issues: Disconnects, Coverage, Throughput Problems - Report Here

Dear CellC,

I am now compelled to leave CellC and move to another Internet Provider.

Apart from not being able use the internet on things like news videos, I am dependent to a large degree on my Voip phone. When the download speed gets to below 1 Mbps (which is often in the afternoon and evening) it breaks down voice communication.

It is about 2 months since I laid my complaint. Since then a tech has come to check the speeds and a call centre has asked if the service has improved. It is evident the CellC antenna here is overloaded with users (you sold more contracts than you can service) and that the only solution is for CellC to upgrade its equipment which CellC cannot do in the short term. I cannot wait until then.

I'm using Cell C LTE through Afrihost in Green Point. The connection is very spotty and frequently has issues.

This is most notable in web browsers (I've tried Firefox and Chrome, both have the same certificate issue) where when trying to connect to sites at times it randomly stops loading the page. Chrome gives an ERR_CONNECTION_RESET error but previously it also gave certificate errors. Other times, Firefox gives me a warning that I need to log into the network again, and upon checking the router management page I see suddenly 'no service' and that I've been disconnected.

This is definitely not a device issue for my computer nor the router as both worked flawlessly right until I inserted the new SIM card.

When it works, it works fine, but web browsing becomes a chore as I have to spam F5 to try and get the page to start loading.

I also experience the same as quoted above. Also roughly after every hour that I am connected it will disconnect and then reconnect. That is a big pain when trying to play online games.

I spoke to Afrihost support via their live chat earlier today, the guy said that he reset my connections with Afrihost and if the problem persisted I needed to email them a speed test and a traceroute. Did that as the problem still persists though not entirely sure what a speed test result has to do with the disconnections. Then again my knowledge about these things are limited.

I have cancelled CellC and gone over to Telkom.

Their speeds are fantastic!!

I cancelled my 50GB account for R350 earlier this month due to disconnects and the dial up speeds I was getting despite my router showing 5 bars.
I just received a cancellation invoice for R999 for cancelling the RAIN promotion...??????????????????
I am about to go to war with Afrihost. I received 12gig of promotional data last month but at no time did I take a modem or any device from them..

Beware!!

Hi there need some help
I'm on pinnacle unlimited and have been for about 2 years.
I moved yesterday to another unit in the same complex and the signal now is almost unusable and my battery drains now in minutes due to it trying to get signal.
Please can you assist me ?
I have had to resort to roaming on another network :(

Hi Marine1

Please PM us your Cell C number, physical address and an alternative contact number.

We will refer the matter to our Network team.

Almost always disconnects after exactly 1 hour of connectivity. Been like this since I got the service (2 months ago). Only a reboot of the router restores connectivity (obtaining a different ip address). Often multiple consecutive reboots are required (max 6 thus far). I get full signal strength before and after the disconnect.
Afrihost support completely clueless... (paraphrased): "we see that you have made a connection since logging the query, so everything is fine now". The mind boggles how they manage to eat without hurting themselves.

Tonight, however, there is absolutely no connectivity: I've rebooted the router > 10 times, and still no connection. I'm at my wits end. Any help would be much appreciated.

Same problem. Same regular problems too with having to reload.. @Cell C says you need to follow up with Afrihost. @Afrihost tells you to move the device around etc.. surely they must know it's all BS from their side..
I'm ready to cancel.

Finally managed to get a connection after a few hours of outage.
I had a fibre preorder with Afrihost. With their incompetence I've canceled and ordered with cisp instead.

I still don't know what to do with the CellC issues. Full signal strength, but disconnects exactly an hour after being connected. That's not poor coverage, that bs happening on their side!

From Afrihost, on 30 August 2018:
***************************************************************
From what I can see during your sessions my system tells me that you are disconnecting because of a NAS-ERROR, this error is indicating you are out of range, have poor coverage, congestion in the area or high levels of noise.
This is the cause of both the intermittentcy for when it drops, and also for the speed hikes and drops.

Currently our NOC engineers are still corresponding with CELL C to try and figure out a resolution to this issue.

***************************************************************

With full bars I am not out of range, nor do I have poor coverage. W.r.t. noise and congestion... how exactly does that cause the router to disconnect after EXACTLY 1 hour of connectivity, any time of the day or night. Evidently their NOC "engineers" have been corresponding with Cell C for over a month, and are still unable to figure out a resolution to this issue.

After I bitched and moaned for them to escalate my query to a supervisor, I get this e-mail (supposedly from a supervisor?), on 8 September 2018:

***************************************************************
I am sorry to hear about your connectivity issues.

Please provide us with the following information:

1. How far are your Wi-Fi devices from the router?
2. Run speed tests on http://speedtest.net from a device connected to the router Wi-Fi and another connected by Ethernet cable and take full screenshots.

Please let us know should you need assistance with anything else.

***************************************************************

How the fun (fun is not quite the word I want to use) does the distance between the router and a connected device cause the router to lose connectivity and require a reboot (or 6 reboots) in order to establish connectivity again. Also, I had already sent them a speedtest at this point (showing 25+Mbps download). So, apparently, this exemplary employee was sorry to hear about my connectivity issues, but not sorry enough to actually find out what my symptoms were.

The next bastion of Afrihost support takes over, and on 20 September I get this e-mail:
***************************************************************
I do apologize for the delayed response and the inconvenience you have been experiencing.
My name is -name removed- and I have taken the initiative to assist you with your query. I have
taken a look at your account and I have picked up that you have established a connection
since the last time you received feedback till date. Is everything working fine now?

***************************************************************

(At this point do allow me to coin a new term: Afritard. I think they have gone out of their way to earn it.)
Alright, so, this Afritard actually took the initiative! but like the previous Afritard, didn't bother trying to understand what the symptoms were. In my e-mails to them it was clear that losing connectivity after exactly 1 hour of being connected is the symptom. And then this Afritard comes with: "I have picked up that you have established a connection since the last time you received feedback till date. Is everything working fine now?"
Now I am not a violent person, but never before did I picture, with such complete clarity, someone being backhanded such that they fly across the room.

After explaining nicely how idiotic his/her question sounded in light of my actual problem, I get an e-mail with some settings for DNS and MTU and for setting dynamic IP.
Non of which worked. I have informed them of such.

And the last communication now reads:
***************************************************************
Thank you for providing me with feedback. I have also done a follow up
in this regard and I do apologies as we experiencing a slight issue with
Cell C on our network. Our Dev team is currently on this to bring us a
more constructive decision.

***************************************************************

That's right folks: having to reboot your router anywhere from 10 to 50 times a day is "a slight issue".

And the biggest irony of all? Every e-mail from them ends with:

Afrihost.com
Pure Internet Joy!

Not just an issue in CT. Having same issue in Joburg. Been on Cell C fixed wireless through Afrihost for a month now. Connection drops like clockwork every hour. Afrihost unable to tell me what is the problem. They just keep sending me settings to change but no matter what, the connection keeps dropping. Download speeds are also pathetic for what is supposed to be LTE-A. Lucky if I get download speeds above 4Mbps when, according to Cell C, I can expect speeds up to 100Mbps. Bloody ridiculous.

Now I come on these forums and see people have been complaining about this for months. Clearly Cell C is either incapable or unwilling to fix the problem. Definitely plan on cancelling the service after 6 months.

I'm actually going to cancel tomorrow and move back to RAIN..... yeah their network is crap but in terms of stability they are way more reliable

What other options are there? I moved from RAIN because it deteriorated so badly it was unusable in the evenings. Is there a reasonable telkom prepaid option? I'm in the process of getting fibre, so I just need something for a couple of months.

You are lucky that you are getting Fibre...Does anyone know of the process to speed up a request for Fibre in an area?

Hi Compu, did you manage to move back the Rain LTE package? I have the Cell C Fixed Wireless package with Afrihost aswell and having big issues with connectivity and I'm now at a point where i will rather completely cancel my service with Afrihost and move to Telkom maybe. They have told me that i will have to pay R999 for cancellation because i took the router deal, however i migrated my package to Cell C and didn't want the router because i was on the Rain LTE connection already and received a LTE router with the package so no need for another one.

I received my Cell C sim. Tested yesterday and was amazed at the speed. Around 70Mbps down and similar UP.
But today it dropped........
I get bad speeds now.
I have 100% LTE Cell-C signal according to my router.
See Screen photos.

Is this normal? Maybe there is a problem at cell C?
