Yup, even Youtube video randomly won't open but when they do they play fine. Webpages still an issue. Paul, is this Layer2 as well?

Do you have an example for me? A hostname that's not resolving?
 
Sometimes I look at my download speed and smile

Same file about 15 mins apart

Anyone have any ideas why it would vary so much?

Seems to be random... I can't replicate the issue consistently.

Also had issues this morning, lost connection to wow international servers for about 30 mins. But had access to local content.

Vumatel, trenched, Northcliff fairlands area.

I think you summed it up. The fibre rush is exactly that, rushed. Mad competitive, constant upgrades and new infrastructure rolling out. Things will settle down as the country is saturated with fibre and networks are more focused on fine tuning rather than expanding footprints

We saw that as well, we're still investigating. One of the metro links in KZN failed over to a backup at the same time.

This this weird throttling happening on Youtube, not sure for how long but downloading a youtube clip will run at max line speed for about 5 seconds and then decrease to around 4-5MB/s. If I pause and resume the same thing happens, max speed for 5 seconds before being throttled down to 4-5MB/s...

I really can't say conclusively. I noticed it months ago but never really worried about it. I wasn't able to replicate the anomaly consistently enough to be bothered by it but just lately it seems to be quite consistent.

Seems quite normal, remember Google will try and save throughput by releasing a chunk of data then wait until a "stream" has consumed the data then release more. That way if someone opens a large file it doesn't feed the complete file just for the user to watch or listen to a few seconds of the file.
