The intention ( at least mine ) is not to put people off CISP - definitely not - I was one of those guys that couldn't WAIT to get signed up with them. I was so sick and tired of my LTE with Telkom.
I just feel so disappointed having such great expectations from the start, and now feeling let down by what i get for my money - especially because we pay SO MUCH for these products. I'm not unthankful ( on the contrary ). I know very few people have access to fibre in SA, but maaaaaaan...come on !!! 100Mbps or 200Mps - we should NOT be struggling like this... no matter who's to blame for the issues...
Only thing i guess is if the issues lie at the source - but i think it's been proven that in the case of RD - some guys have great speed, while others struggle...
I think this is a little naive. Sure having fiber and now finally world class line speeds is great and a MASSIVE (I can't emphasize this enough) step in the right direction, the internet and its services aren't as simple as "I have a faster line therefore everything should be perfect."
Here have a look at this:
This is the server distribution around the world for Overwatch league. Notice something? Africa is one of about 12 locations around the world who doesn't have a server. Yes I understand Overwatch is just a game but in the time I've been around the internet this is pretty par for the course of where international companies put servers. Actually its probably more generous than what most companies would do. We (Africa) just don't register on their radars. Amazon web services is another one that comes to mind.
The issues of not having local servers can be immense. Usually games, and I'd make an educated guess and say applications too, are built to be used at 90ms and less. We get 140 at absolute best, thats still well outside that range. Just think about what happens to one packet if gets lost at 140ms compared to what happens if you were using it at 20ms.
From what I've seen and read our fiber internet is probably on par or better than America's is, however they have the luxury of having every server and online service being BUILT for them.
Ugh I'm not saying it can't be done and it frustrates me that I can't always watch twitch but I do at least understand SOME of the challenges of making an international service like twitch work correctly, there are lots of moving parts some of which out of CISP's hands.
