Also bear in mind that home connect lock down the router, so you have to either add your own router and get them to forward all traffic to it's wan port or constantly raise support tickets for them to make the changes for you. This is the main reason I ruled out home connect when deciding on an ISP. I prefer to be in control of my own security.

We are busy playing with the idea, it's tabled for next week so will come back with some detail once I have it. We also would like the operators to drop their 1Gbps line fees.

Are you saying that you would be able to offer 1Gbs fibre packages???

Any ISP can offer 1Gbps packages, but to be realistic it wouldn't be 1Gbps international access, more around local content.

It also has to be managed from a marketing perspective, a customer would signup expecting to get 1Gbps of access to their mobile phones for example or to any wireless device which is obviously not quite possible, which then brings on a whole other layer of support and solution.

100Mbps has come to market very quickly, starting to push 1Gbps into market leaves little room to offer new circuits after that so from that perspective it should be considered wisely. Offering 200,500 would be better IMHO. I still dont see a need for anything >100Mbps.

Most computers connected by cable would not achieve 1Gbps or even close on speedtests so product assurance is difficult.

Most basic home routers would battle to route/nat 1Gbps, the CPU's are just not capable.

Local content or providers are generally not ready for the added bursty traffic that 1Gbps customers could bring from things like speedtests (sigh) and software updates from CDN's.

I would be more concerned about deploying IPv6 (dual stack or native). Africa is falling behind on IPv6 deployment, all these open access providers should be ensuring they are V6 enabled. What better way to increase IPv6 numbers than with FTTH.

Agreed we have requested 200M and 500M as you mention, Vumatel need to take this to exco now and table the options around it. They also dont have v6 support as yet, is why we elected HE and IS as our upstreams which are v6 native.

Sounds like you have a hundred meg Ethernet in there somewhere. Upgrade switch and Nic to gigabit and you'll see over 100

A 200M and 500M package would be awesome, if the price is right! I for one would certainly look at that over a 1GB package.
 
@PBCool,

My fibre line went down yesterday at around 6:30pm and has been down ever since (ALM and PON lights are both red) this suggests theres something wrong with the line. Support tickets response times are honestly too slow to even bother with, I had some previous queries that took 24-48hrs just for a response.

I call in this morning and the support guy says i need to be at home to troubleshoot else he can't proceed. Why? i already resetted the fiber modem multiple times. I don't have an account connectivity issue but a line issue. Ocotel needs to come check my line, and not me trouble shooting my router account details.
