My theory is that Octotel (and some other FISPs) are putting restrictions in place i.e. throttling between 18:00 and 22:00 to save money/cut corners.

There was a gentleman earlier that posted his speed results over wifi, also Octotel, I think somewhere Blouberg area. His speed is perfect. I think it affects certain areas. I am hoping @PBCool can take this up with Octotel.

I am in Blouberg... and I can assure you my internet is KAK! It is likely Octotel... and them throttling

Think? More like know. FTTH is a contended service. Businesses pay big bucks for a 1:1 line. I have only seen one ISP that dared to advertise their service as uncontended (Macrolan - not that believe them).
 
Don't believe speedtests 100%, they are prioritised and not always a true reflection of what really goes on in the background....

On International to London, i have never got even 50% of line speed. All test from cable ( Gigabit network at home).
 
@PBCool So guess what my problem was..
Friggen Denial of Service attack on my router.... via the wireless, onto the Mikrotik.
Turn Wifi off... full line speed.

Does anyone here know how I can secure these things because this is a new issue, since moving into a new area it happens, a LOT

Change your wifi SSID and convert it to a hidden SSID - then you just need to manually set up every device you want to connect to the SSID. I don't know if this will work, but my guess is it will. Also, you can normally set up your wifi access point to only allow MAC addresses set up in a list, then it'll block all other MAC addresses. I hope one of these two solutions work!

I am doing the latter. Hiding the SSID has been proven to be a non-issue with hackers and also causes problems with some Android devices. Also the latter is how we do it at the office so that's how I am going to roll with it.

I dont think you know what you are talking about my friend. Your little Microtik is of no interest to any hacker or activist out on the internet - I can assure you that.

Refresher on what a DDOS actually is. You do not fall in this category i believe, unless you host some well known website(s), or provide an internet service that lots of people find useful.

I have to agree with @Fjorko.
Why would anyone want to DDoS and average user, just sounds highly unlikely. The resources required to execute an attack like that needs to be warranted, which for a simple home user just ain't worth it.

Plus, the fact that it stopped when you turned off wifi, means it was someone that is within wifi range. So more than likely you had terrible security on your wifi and some clever little knob close by decided to make your life difficult.

Just use WPA2 for the password and apply some additional steps like suggested and you should be good. If someone is spamming your wifi to try and hack the password for it, then yeah, rename SSID and hide it. Or don't hide it and leave it open, but apply mac filtering. That way there is no need for the attacker to even attempt hacking you.

Whatever hey, the router was hacked into on the 21st while I was configuring it (I hadn't yet changed the password)

I would’nt hide the SSID.

WPA2 with strong password, then allow only trusted MAC addresses.

Yeah the last time I hid the SSID I ended up with iPads and iPhones not being able to connect at random times, and complaining about the WiFi.

I am just happy that the internet, my FTTH is nice and stable, and when I find issues, it turns out to be routers and crap in my home. No need for support tickets or pestering PBCool
