Blouberg - Octotel 100mb/25... On Friday the connection went down for about an hour, ever since then its been crap, tonight being the worst.

I think thats an octotel issue to be honest. I constantly hear horror stories from friends located in complexes with Octotel installed. Does not matter if they have coolideas or other ISP, same problems.

I got 4 people here streaming twitch all day if not 24/7 and right this moment no issue at source quality.
Same story with me, my test was with a 1080p YT running in the background. I chuck along going like a boeing

Well, how did your move from coolideas go ? Not to rub salt in your wound but it seems like you made a bad decision based on those results. :-/

I'm not paying Octotel. Local servers get full line speed. International servers get 5% of line speed, if I'm lucky - the recent one got 2.5Mbs, upload won't even start.

Move went well. That's one thing about Cool Ideas account department. None of this calendar month BS.

Notified them on the 15th I was cancelling, was told account would end on the 30th and the line released back to Vuma. Asked them if it could be released immediately and was told yes. By 11h00 on the 17th CISP had cancelled and released the line back to Vuma. At 12h37 I received my account log in details with Homeconnect.

And I been regretting it ever since.... :cautious::crying:

Same, no issues at all, but I’ve never once had Twitch issues or any streaming issues in 6 months now. 4K, 1080, everything always works perfectly with no buffering no matter the time of day.

If you are paying nothing for the service then I guess you should be happy with any service at all. :p

But if it matters to you this seems like a full on Octotel being total crap related service.

Again - I don't pay Octotel. That is Cool Ideas issue.

You make no sense, you are on Octotel. I am telling you Octotel is causing the problems you are experiencing even though you are using Coolideas as a service provider.

If you believe Coolideas have any ability to fix Octotel issues you have unrealistic expectations.

If I have Vumatel issues I am not going to start shtting on Coolideas for poor performance.

At exactly 10 minutes before 7 the buffering started. Anything international unusable. Octotel 100/25 download speedtest not even 2mb international

I feel ya pain on Octotel especially if its the only fibre provider you are able to access. Its easier if the problem lies with an ISP such as coolideas to resolve but I dread the day vumatel network is giving issues that would be the start of the end and I think Octotel is permanently overcongested these days during primetime.

Can confirm Octotel is garbage. I've not been able to stream twitch between 6-10pm for over 4 months now. The situation on my end is degrading fast. It used to be just I couldn't watch twitch but now packet loss is everywhere.

This is from tonight:

MTR:

lnms.cisp.co.za

This is from the 29th of November

My friend on TTconnect has less issues than I do.

At this point it feel like I've traded one Telkom for another. Ironically people on Telkom fiber don't seem to be having issues.

And that is Multi threads  Waste of money being on 1Gbps.

1Gbps is only good for local and maybe like 40 multiple threaded international downloads. I saw a move from 100Mbps to 200Mbps was not that major anyways and hdd bottlenecks started. You have to multi thread each international download to get full speed which causes disk io issues so it's not really worth it. 1Gbps will only really be worth it if you are looking at ~R1500 then it's worth it.

So your next step? Downgrade to 200/200 and stay with HC or move back to CISP?

I would downgrade first so can compare apples with apples.

Not sure at this stage. I did a fresh install on my daughters OP5t yesterday. Downloaded the 1.7gb update file in about 20 seconds. After doing the fresh install, restoring and installing all apps and data from a cloud backup took about 7 minutes. That sort of convenience and performance is somewhat intoxicating!

Yeah, for the sake of science I would downgrade if anything so we can see what a 200Mbps Homeconnect account tastes like.

What I will say, the sign up process was seamless, the online UI is fairly useful with real time usage stats, my ticket logged on the 18th has already been responded too telephonically, where the techie basically said they can't guarantee anything over 100Mbps on international. I said no problem, better not advertise your account as 1Gbps then. Rather advertise it as 1Gbps local and 100Mbps international so that people's expectations are under done rather than over cooked. He said he would escalate... I got a sms notifying me of a network outage in Boksburg so that's how that works which is handy too. Minutes later the outage was confirmed in this thread, Vumatel outage effecting all subscribers in the effected area.

@R2288 per month it's one of the cheapest 1Gbps packages out there...

Anyone want to know how much data a speedtest @950Mbps uses? Just over a gig!!!

That's my best dsl reports test result to date...

Sad part is it's R500 in Singapore, and it's considered entry level - It's given for free with their TV subscription, which is also cheap. They have 10Gb/s at 1.5k being the best for now. If you looking for the best internet experience, South Africa is not it.

Not really a fair comparison. If you look at stats most of these connections are available only in densely populated cities. Even in the US there are still people stuck with dsl connections. ISP's in EU also has this massive advantage. Even if their clients torrent it's usually EU peers and most of their traffic seldom leaves the EU and if it does it's just a hop over to the US.

South Africa does not host as much content as EU and NA and most of our traffic needs to travel long distances to reach the destination.

Even if SA started offering 10Gbps it still won't matter because we will still have slow international speeds and high latency it just won't change unless South Africa breaks free from the African continent and drift and join the EU or maybe NA.
