Openserve Cape Town here, been really bad at night. Hoping the capacity gets upgraded otherwise I'll have no option then to move providers. Which I really don't want to do as Cool Ideas has been great otherwise.

Sad to say that you are at the mercy of OpenServe here and they don't really give a crap how urgent it is. I remember in Durban when I initially signed up with CoolIdeas it was absolutely horrible from the start and cancelled within in the first week of signing up and literally the next day it got sorted (I decided to stay after this).
The second time this happened, it was sorted within 2 days.
The third time I recalled this happening it was luckily only a slight amount of congestion, but it took about 2 weeks to get sorted.

Moral of the story is, this depends on OpenServe's schedule and priority. I have noticed that Durban they have gotten very good and catching this early and adapting. Guessing it isn't quite the same in Cape Town or it caught them by surprise and now they are scrambling.

just my 10c.

EDIT: I noticed after typing this people on SuperSonic with OpenServe also been complaining about congestion in the Cape Town area. So it isn't just CoolIdeas.

Got a call from Divian. Frogfoot are being difficult as usual. They want more speedtests as they don't believe him and me that we aren't reaching the right international speeds.

They claim I am only using 50mbps of my line...

So we will be sending them some screenshots once home...

Seems Octotel is also just as reluctant to do anything, considering we can expect it any day now

Yeah, got feedback from CISP this morning wrt my single thread woes on FrogFoot. Got one of those devices installed at my place, and apparently they can't see anything wrong with the line. I must now tell them when I'm having speed problems so they can test, but the speed problems are constant - so I think I'm boned.

Set up a script which sends them an e-mail every time your speeds drop below 75% of your line speed...maybe then they'll start understanding the problem :D

Single thread to international isn’t that great.

I might not be a networking guru but what I'm seeing is that we have many users (myself on metrofibre) on various fibre providers with similar speed test issues to international, upload exceeding download and dismal download numbers

so someone tell me how then could this be a fibre provider issue when the common denominator is cool ideas ? I went through similar stuff with afrihost and left them ... why do I get the sense that cool ideas is not being totally transparent to us !? I can be very wrong but evidence points to cool ideas ... what's stark is that there are users with no issues ... could it be oversubscription on certain boxes ? (I dunno how this stuff works)

This is why we will always wonder exactly who's telling the truth . . . . . . knowledge is power

Exactly.

99% of the time congestion issues will go like this. You complain to ISP, ISP says they brought it up with FNO. FNO says everything is fine and that ISP is the issue. ISP say FNO is the issue. Round and round we go. @adamr Its your choice who you choose to believe, I'm not going to tell you who's right and who's wrong. You need to make up your own mind about that. If you want to leave CISP, then I support you.

The reason myself and a few others choose to believe CISP over Octotel is we've spoken with Paul quite a bit about it and it grew our trust in them. CISP was also recently proven right about the Blouberg area where Octotel initially said nothing is wrong, CISP obviously showed them some kind of proof and like magic Octotel found an issue in Blouberg.

I don't know how it works either and it seems to be a whole world of grey areas so its up to you who you want to trust and believe.

If IPC capacity is the issue then it's the ISP.

If it's delays enabling applied capacity and OLT congestion then you can put the blame squarely on Openserve

The issue is, when you get slow single threaded performance to international sites, it always looks like an IPC issue - don't know if it necessarily is.

Look like I got happy for nothing over the weekend, buffering is starting on my Octotel 100/25 Cape Gate area.

See the thing is that most people seem to just overlook. Back on ADSL loss this not affect speeds that much because they were already so poor. With Fibre speed this high any international is a roll of the dice on single. just a few retransmits and the connection speed tanks. So many issues to consider. Where is the loss. OLT congestion, faulty router on Openserve side. IPC congestion. Faulty router on ISP side. Somewhere on the transit faulty router or congestion causing loss or even destination being congested it's almost impossible to diagnose in some cases.

I think we are going to see the same complaints of ADSL on fibre.

I'm using Supersonic and a few nights I have seen increased latency but the IPC hop on mtr is fine the latency is happening somewhere else on the MTN network that looks like somewhere in Teraco but the symptoms look like IPC congestion. Busy dealing with Supersonic on the issue.

9pm check in.
