the IS one has a few days, while the premium one uses a non-standard retention policy so it's a hit or miss.

Some content is up to 2000+ days. If the server is issued DMCA or the content aggregator is served a DMCA, there is very little that one can do other than to try another version of the same file.

If the server config is setup so that it fails over to the premium server you get the best performance coupled with the widest content net...

NGN? They just cycle content and pull old requested articles when needed, don't see why anyone would use NNTP for old releases when P2P is so much more capable, and resilient to things like DMCA or other takedowns.

I regularly download 1500+ day content. Not with NGN/IS combo alone though.

If you want reliable usenet CrystalWeb gives you a good start (and saves you a lot of money) - but don't expect a high completion rate without backup accounts.

it doesnt always work though, even if the content is a week old. At least thats what ive come across, so either i have something incorrectly set up, or something isnt right with whatever content i download lol

I posted on their Facebook page yesterday, after emailing 2 days ago, and after having called them where they were supposedly gonna do it for me. They did it within a few hours after the Facebook post.

No way in hell that I was gonna wait 1 week, never mind 3. You have much more patience than me. If it was a free service they're providing, by all means take your time, but not for paying customers.

This is scary. I mailed [email protected] at 13h18 to move my line to the holding pool. Got the call from them at 14h22!!!!

Then the standard: We require a 1 month notice. Will only move after 14 May....

So far so good, although my expectations of Telkom is less than what I ecpect from the ruling party....

Hmmm, first point of concern for me .... yes 1 month's notice for service cancellation yes, for the migration? not so sure it is required ....

The line is with Telkom ISP. Those are their rules.

Stop thinking Telkom is Telkom is Telkom...:p

I guess you have some form of contract with them then? 1 month is ridiculous. :wtf:

:p So that is the rule with Telkom ISP, 1 month notice to migrate a line ...... Good to know.

Ja well no fine, us ex Telkom persons do have a tough time learning to live with the new BS in the organization ...

Hey, there's two things I can build for you! Your last mile, and a bridge...:D

My line is with Telkom. I presume the line went to Telkom ISP when I moved from M-Web. Now THAT was scary ... what a struggle. Almost a year down the line, and my account with Mweb is still open. Receives regular statements etc... all because I have a 20 odd cents credit with them
My experience when moving from Mweb was terrible, and I decided to leave the management of the line with Telkom to enable me to move to any other ISP at any time.

My experience with CW is positive, to the extend that I can actualy see the advantage of moving my line to CW as well.

But do you have a contract for the line? It shouldn't take a whole month from Telkom to the holding pool. You are one patient person.

Who did I migrate from then? I had my line at Telkom(or so I thought) and it took 2 days after my Facebook post to completion at Crystal Web.

I suspect not everyone in Telkom is enforcing the rules. I cannot speak for them on their policies though. My previous comment was simply one of observation about that specific situation...

I have not had to contact my ISP in a very, very long time .....

So I thought let go and look at Telkom's website .....

Searched for "Holding Pool" Wholesale Pool", checked the FAQs and so far have not found anything useful. Checked the Community and see some queries with some trying to help but on the whole no real help available there either. Seems Telkom does NOT check what the community is up to at all, nor what is bothering the community.

The whole business of moving a line into the Holding pool is not covered by their FAQs either ....

At least no dead links, missing pictures or failed urls, Everything works on the site as far as I can see ...

Help for existing customers ? ...... pretty confusing so far.

Bad news is the site says no fibre on the horizon in my area ...

Its about having the right combination of providers from different backbones. Some experimentation required - r/usenet on Reddit is the best source imho. Also see this map: https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/wiki/providers

But there's also takedowns - especially with popular shows / movies recently released. If something is uploaded within a month or so of its release its often removed within 12-24 hours - so if you are not automating downloads you tend to miss that window.

Tried many different combo's but what works best so far is IS (Free with CrystalWeb) + UseNet.farm as primary and NextGenNews (also free with CrystalWeb) + BlockNews as backup.

I have about 95% download success and my blocks last a long time.

Got a trial account from CW last night. Did a live chat at 11:50pm last night. The guy or gal immediately responded to me, and I thought that was pretty impressive.

Did some tests and saw there was quite a high ping spikes to the exchange. Basically it seems something is wrong with my line or at the exchange somewhere, so it seems that doesn't matter which isp I go with, unless Telkom sorts out the exchange or the line somewhere, I'm going to huff and puff during the evenings when it comes to streaming.

I'm an Afrihost client, but I would reccommend Crystal Web to anybody who wants a great package from an end to end experience. You also won't get a better CEO than DJ who is actively involved.

Hopefully in the coming months wholesale will lower their pricing, and I can climb on board and join the CW family. But for those who can afford it, you going to get a fantastic experience.

So, when's the portal upgrade going to be done? My one still only registers my use as 9.7GB for the month and only has stats available for the first day of the month.
