Maybe there's a list of authorised users that CW maintains, and I just wasn't added to it? If the news server doesn't respond to unauthorised users, then I wouldn't get an auth error.

I'm not even using a non-CW DNS. And I haven't ever had issues getting news servers to work until now, and in any case it's only this one server. I have to assume the issue isn't on my end.

Thanks for the help though. Really appreciate it.
Premium server uses a username and password. IS server does not. Seems there is an issue with this aspect...

I'm sure one of the first things I tried was using the login credentials provided for the backup server on the primary server. I'll give it another go though.

Maybe you guys should email out the correct news server settings. My welcome email definitely said no login for primary and login for secondary.

Bryn have you had a chat to the guys on live chat yet?

They said support isn't offered for news servers. Although they did say that they submitted a request for someone there to test that the news server is functional at all and said I'd get an email concerning the matter.

Is news server is locked down by ip address. CW addresses should work outright.

Primary server is IS as it is local. Secondary is the premium server. Email shows this as the configuration and shows which require auth and which don't, so the email is 100% correct...

Thanks for clarifying. Shouldn't the servers be called 'Local/IS' and 'Premium' then to avoid confusion? If I hadn't had issues I would never have used the premium server. Pretty sure I didn't use it once during my 2 months on CW last year.

That confuses me though, because the premium server has been working for me but hasn't been performing well. Downloads climb to 8MB/s quite quickly but then drop to around 3 or 4MB/s and fluctuate constantly between that level and around 6MB/s.

In the past my speeds generally never dipped below 9MB/s.

That's not how it's setup in a news server client. We send you the details as per how it would be setup in any news client. So if you follow the instructions it works 100% which is why I'm not quite sure where the confusion arose here.

Thing is, international servers and connections will always be subject to various performance factors, hence why we offer the local IS one as well...

I only suggest it because CW makes a point of mentioning the premium news server on offer, but then don't specify which provided server is the premium one. And for those like myself who might assume 'primary' means premium, they'd be wrong.

@DJ... Are you still lurking about? My Internet connection has just stopped working. Even the Telkom guest account is not working...

*edit* I have submitted a support ticket but I suspect there is no-one at the help desk due to it being a public holiday...

Are you now able to use both servers?

I had them both working in SABnzbd just now. Newsbin Pro won't use the primary server no matter what I try.

The speeds are atrocious though. Both primary and secondary servers were getting less than 1MB/s in SABnzbd (often half that). Ever since I first got fibre, both my Afrihost news server and my Newsdemon server seldom dipped below 9MB/s.

Edit: Just fired up another nzb to check. 1.1MB/s is the absolute max speed it will download.

On Web Africa, how are the speeds using exactly the same config and client?

Still running like a champ on my side. Zero issues what-so-ever.

Been this way...going on a year now. Just marvelous.

@Bryn - that is strange. I also have 100mb fibre and using the CW news servers. Running full tilt in download time 00:00 - 06:00. Strange.

Sorry, I replied to you as MyBB went down. Looks like the reply was lost.

I switched to my WA account and couldn't get any free news server to work. Could be that they don't work on a free account, or that I don't know what the news server is for WA. I tried news1.crystalweb.co.za, 196.26.208.250, news.is.co.za and news.wa.co.za. I tried tinkering with the settings a fair bit with the latter two, but to no avail.

My old Afrihost account still works until the end of the month thanks to their rollover policy, and news.afrihost.co.za gets 9-11MB/s on it.

How weird. Are you using the premium/secondary server or the IS/primary one?
