Just a question regarding sync rates...

Had a disagreement with Support Warrior from CW on live chat.

I went from:
- Service: 4Mb/s
- Line Sync Speed: 5Mb/s (just above)

To:
- Service: 8Mb/s
- Line Sync Speed: 8Mb/s

So I asked him why I'm not syncing at 10Mb/s now, because in reality I'm only getting 230KB/s more download speed than with supposedly half the speed - from 490 to 720, which is in reality less than 6Mb/s.

Now, I know this was normal behaviour until like a year ago, but then sync rates got upped in order for us to get our real speeds which we are paying for.

Support Warrior says that, if I want it to sync at 10, I need to pay for a 10Mb/s line. Has anyone experienced this?

When I asked this person why I was getting 5 whilst only paying for for, he said it's because they don't have a 4Mb/s service.

So, in short, are all of you on 8Mb/s indeed syncing at 8 only, or are you on 10? If I'm wrong then I'll leave it, but I don't believe that I am.

If you upgraded to 8mbps, you would be around 6.5mbps or there abouts. Are you on fast or interleaved?

Let me rephrase, as it may have been unclear what I'm asking, judging by your reply.

Since I - and indeed everyone I've seen on here - got a sync of 5 on a 4 meg service at no extra cost, why can't I get 10 sync on an 8 service instead of 8, at no extra cost?

It was upped back then in order to allow us to get nearly all the speed we're paying for, but why is this applicable to a 4 meg service, but not an 8 meg service?

Because there is no 5mb service offering.

But there are 8 and 10mb ones.

Also even when I had 5mb sync I never saw more than 3.7mb or so, which leads me to believe it wasn't the real speed actually allowed to pass through the line.

Hence i ask if you are/were on interleaved. If you were, you would be bumped to 5mbps. It wasn't an extra increase in speed as such, more to stabilise your line.

Now if you look at your stats, are you on a Fast profile or Interleaved?
 
Yeah, this is not nearly good enough.

If this isn't fixable, I'll be downgrading to 4 again soon, because it's not worth it for almost the same speed, whatever their reasons.

And 8MB should test at least 6.8-7 even on 8Mb/s sync rate. Now it's dwindling between the above and 5.19. Not to mention the upload speed.

Not sure(router doesn't show that), but that's not important now anyway.

EDIT: Never mind, judging by the ping, I'm definitely back on FastPath now. I was on interleaved before.

You shouldnt be below 6.. you should be around 6 and 7 on an 8 meg line

Yeah.

I sent this off to support before going to bed, and they replied to test again. So I tested before coming to work, and my download speed has normalised (6.99), but my upload is still borked at 0.66(should be at least 0.80).

At least they know what they're doing to fix stuff, so I'm hoping they can resurrect it.

On a 20 meg line, im only at around 14mbps. My uploads is only at around 1mbps. On good days i can go to around 17, but ive just left it, as fighting with Telkom is a pain

Hey,
Can you give your full line stats? I'm wondering if you're on Adsl and not Adsl2+.
And for 8Mbps you should be getting 80-86% of line speed after overheads, so 6.4Mbps+.
Are you sure there are no other background services running ?

That it shows. ADSL 2+. Definitely nothing running in the background. And it should be at least 6.8-7.0 - when syncing at 8 like I am currently - not 6.4.

Anyway, like I've said just now, download is normalised now at 6.99, just need to get that upload sorted now.

Twitch is also really bothering me. How the *** can I not be able to stream 1080p with a 100Mbps fibre connection? Worked fine when I had fibre at my previous address, both on Afrihost and CW.

Test on AH now and compare to rule out some location ****ery. I'm really curious as to why the routes taken are different.
