Home-Connect ISP Feedback

I have to say these Homeconnect clowns are the most useless ISP i have ever used.......3 days, 1 order, still nothing. Even openweb was better than you morons.

Home -connect Core response

@Waylander @websquadza

Our PPPoE tunnel's have a set MTU of 1480.

This can unfortunately not be 1500 as the ethernet segment is typically 1500 and we don't have control over the interim fibre providers networks, or the customer routers, so we make allowance for some additional space for additional vlan tags, encapsulation, etc.

Therefore a value of 1480 works for us across the multiple fibre providers that we interconnect with.

For a standard MTU of 1500 bytes, the maximum data size in a ping is 1472 bytes (MTU minus 20 bytes IP header and 8 bytes for the ICMP header).

Therefore, when pinging across the 1480 PPPoE tunnel, this maximum data size is 1452 (1480 - 20 - 8), as shown in the testing done to 8.8.8.8

Sounds right.
It might if 100's of other iperf users were getting the same results under the same circumstances. But I cant find one who is able to replicate these symptoms!!

Home-connect are still trying to find the solution examining it from their perspective on their network when I've informed them multiple times now that this occurred on CISP as well and coincided with my ONT swap out.

Right so still the most rubbish ISP next to Openweb however some progress. I can dial out via PPPOE from my PC however my Dlink DIR 825 flat out refuses to dial out a PPPOE connection over the same link.........

anyone have any ideas on this as i am really out of ideas. I take the same router across the road to my old house in Nerina and boom Vumatel / Crystal Web work fine.........just this ISP that it doesnt work on.

Update: This CCR is still at my residence, been here unplugged for over a week now. Last Wednesday was set aside for onsite testing which was, once again, cancelled.

Seems to be a lot going on behind the scenes but nothing that translates into anything tangible, leading me to believe it's all just smoke and mirrors to give an impression that an effort is being made. Either that or 50Mbps download on an international single thread is considered well within performance parameters for a Home-connect gigabit line.

2 tickets have been opened with Vumatel requesting the MTU settings on the ONT be checked and twice the tickets have been closed without said settings being checked.

Generally the account performs well though, but no better than a 200Mbps account would...

Please do a speedtest.co.za

Why?

A 3rd ticket has been logged but this time with Britelink. I sometimes think Home-connect monitor this thread. Often after I've come on here to rant I get a mail from them.
I'm sure they do, this is where the clever people are and they know they must keep us happy or else everyone will know and coz I got my 1gig today and wanted to compare :D
Think my hdd is the bottleneck now lol, time for a ssd:

Nice. Congrats dude. You need to do the wingnut test for us. Do you still remember what it entails?

@wingnut771 @cavedog Coreix single thread tests here please gents.

I've definitely noticed a drop off in speed since I got fibre, I used to get over 100 on both phone and pc.

I've included 3 consecutive tests with a small rest in between:

and yet, I can achieve this:

Gees man, such a mixed bag of results!! I don't know where to start!! Interesting to me though that with a supposed international rate limit of 200Mbps you getting 40MB/s on a real-debrid single threaded download!! Fck me, that's impressive!!

Yeah, I'm not complaining although, I like to see solid results too, so I know its working, so I'm going to follow up the degrading single thread speedtest with websquad, just got to fix my pc first.

I almost think I've got to let it go, the whole speed test result thingy... starting to drive me nuts!! But single threaded performance on this line is total s hit!! There's no running away from it!! Can you PM that real-debrid link please? Interested to see what speeds I can generate off of it...
