Clothes. I'm acclimatised to the freezing temperatures of the Himalayas, so cold is no problem for me.
Heat is my biggest issue. It's far too warm, even in JHB winter.

tracksuit bottoms, hoody, blanket. Ain't nobody got money for this heater nonsense...

what is this winter you speak of ?

Gas when it's really cold, warm clothes, electric blanket on for 30 minutes before getting into bed.

Other options are:
1) Electric blanket.

2) Portable Inverter aircon for room heating when the next konfabling is born.

Heat pumps are stupidly efficient:
The coefficient of performance of a heat pump is greater than unity so the work required is less than the heat transferred, making a heat pump a more efficient form of heating than electrical resistance heating. As the temperature of the higher-temperature reservoir increases in response to the heat flowing into it, the coefficient of performance decreases, causing an increasing amount of work to be required for each unit of heat being transferred

This one was 22k including installation, I can already see its going to be waaaaay cheaper than gas. Hope you come right :(
I have another Winter to try get it right. Never going to give up this "pipe dream".

Gas heater.

Egoli gas actually pipes gas to our house, and there is a gas heating system fitted, but we turned it off because it costs thousands each month to run. So we just use a gas tank for the heater.
