Hi guys
Curious to know if the Huawei B818 will work with MTN Fixed LTE? I’ve recently ordered a MTN Fixed LTE package from mweb and they said it will only work Huawei’s B525, B612 and B618. However theoretically the B818 should work to right? It is Cat19 after all. So does anyone know if it will actually work or has had any experience of it working? I wouldn’t wanna drop thousands on a 818 only to discover it doesn’t work lol.

many thanks!

My guess is that it won't work! You better check with Afrihost.

According to the information on the iSat website, these models should be suitable -
HUAWEI: B2368, B2368-22, B2368-57, B2368-66, B525S-23A, B525S-65A, B525S-95A, B612-233, B612-533, B612S-25D, B612S-51D, B612S-52D, B618S-22D, B618S-65D, B618S-66D

ZTE: MF286A, MF286C, MF286D, MF286R

ZYXEL: LTE7460

All compatible LTE/A routers work on MTN Fixed LTE-A, problem is, they limiting it to a specific subset of their choosing. If you don't see the B818 listed, am afraid it won't work. Its unfortunately cut and dry like that.

Ah shucks mtn:crying:

Thanks for the info guys!! I appreciate your feed back

The B818 looks like a very nice router! Maybe the selection of Huawei routers will change when MTN starts to use their new 2600MHz spectrum. The B818 should be able to aggregate the different FDD and TDD carriers much more efficiently than the B618 which is only a Cat 9 router. Keep us posted if you get any feedback regarding your query.

I'd like to know this as well. The B535 is another compatible model that isn't listed. Would be good to know whether or not it would get blacklisted on MTN Fixed LTE.

Is there a shop that has this router locally at the moment?

We have many clients that we provided the B818 with contract MTN SIMs and it works no problem, not sure about Fixed LTE.

My gut says it will work because its a router just like the ones they say are "compatible".

Wasn't the requirement for MTN Fixed LTE Cat. 10 Cat. 6 or higher?

The B818 is Cat. 19 which should work.

Ultimately the reason for the requirement is so they can lock you to a tower/region.

Good find.

"O’Sullivan also noted that other routers that are rated Category 6 or above will be compatible with MTN’s Made for Home fixed-LTE plans. "

Has anybody actually tested the Afrihost/Axxess Fixed LTE service with the Huawei B818 router? I am under the impression that it does not work with a TP-Link Cat 6 device for example.

Yeah I would also like to know if/when the Huawei B818 is supported as I can get one now and no one has the B618 as it’s “end of life”.

So if MTN would like more Fixed LTE customers maybe let us use the newer routers that have replaced those that have been phased out.

I don't think that it would be a good idea to purchase a new B618 at the moment. A cheap secondhand unit would be a better option. The B818 appears to be a huge improvement in terms of technology and capabilities.

Try to contact AfriGuy to see if he can get confirmation regarding the use of the B818 on the MTN Fixed LTE network. The B818 appears to have much better support for the SA networks than the B618 which had different versions that supported LTE Band 38 (Rain - B618s-22d) and LTE Band 40 (Telkom - B618s-65d). The B818 supports Bands 38, 40 as well as 41 and has a Cat 19 LTE modem.

What is the current price of the B818?

Thanks, I sent him a PM.

Saw the B818 for around R3500

That's not a bad price considering the terrible exchange rate. The B818s sell for around $200 on Aliexpress excluding shipping, customs, VAT etc.

It appears that some of the new spectrum that is going to become available will be in the LTE bands 5, 20, 28, 38 and 40. My B618s-22d can only access bands 20 and 38. The B618s-65d can only access bands 5, 28 and 40 . The B818 should be able to access all of these bands from the different networks.

Some further discussion about approving the Huawei B818 ...
