iPad 20MB limit over 3G?

I've just thought of something :

Can't one make the iPad a wireless hotspot - then connect to it via my PC (wifi) and download apps that way?

EDIT : Nevermind - it can't do that

I'm sure I read it was possible with one of the 4.x updates. Like sharing iPhone's 3G connection to a wifi iPad.

Perhaps only between iDevices.

20MB?!! Honestly what can you do with 20MB?? Browse facebook then its all dry??

Try:

A. USE YOUR COMPUTER INTERNET CONNECTION OVER WI-FI [YOU WILL NEED CONNECTIFY]

If you have a laptop, download connectify. This lets you share your internet connection over wi-fi for other devices to use.

B. IF YOU HAVE WIFI ADSL MODEM, USE THAT WIFI.

No.

It's got nothing to do with the web, mail, Youtube etc - it's only a 20MB limit from the App Store itself. I've hit my cap on my wi-fi at home ... so my iPad 3G is the only connection I have right now.

As I said in another similar thread I have a micro sim adapter that you are welcome to, otherwise google local suppliers - not that expensive ~R20

Hi Droid,

Thanks for the offer - but if it's R20.00, I won't bug you for it ;)

It's the 1st today - so I've got bandwidth too ...

Thanks again though!

I specifically bought a larger data plan 3G micro sim so that I can download movies etc even when away. Today tried to download movie and also got message to connect to wifi or download using pc. After some googling heard about the 20mb 3G iTunes store restriction. WTF? This kind of defies reason why I have a 3G iPad. Isn't the whole point of an iPad that you can do anything anywhere?

Agreed!

I've got another 2Gb this month .... A friend downloaded Contract Killer on his Xoom and told me to get. Told him I have to wait till home cause it won't let me get more than 20mb and he laughed

Also got a GarageBand update and again, need to wait till home.

No problem -- good luck with your 20mb challenges :)
Ps look out for the iPad 2 jailbreak when it becomes available, the cydia store has a free bypass for the 20mb limit + lots of other goodies that should help to make your Android friends a shade closer to green... :D

I'm probably going to get slaughtered - but incase n00bs find this ... note Facetime only works on wireless.

I heard you can get facetime 3G from the Cydia store. Hopefully I can get it soonish.

Yip it's another hangover from the AT&T thing... Hopefully at some point this will be moved to carrier settings.

Yes FaceTime and the 20mb limit can easily be bypassed with a JB. Sorry but there is still no word on a JB for the iPad 2

Jailbreaking makes one's iDevice 15-20% better than it currently is. Unfortunately anything over 4.3.3 is not available with an untethered jailbreak as yet and no tethered jailbreak exists for the iPad 2 on 4.3.5 and up .. Personally I would be inclined to look elsewhere if Apple permanently close the jailbreak loophole...

Interesting, never knew that - probably because I've never used facetime! :) What are it's obvious advantages compared to using skype?

I'd guess (hope!) that they get allowing an unlimited 3G connection for apps, updates, Facetime etc - at least maybe just a warning about costs (ala Blackberry when you start streaming)

Even when JB does become available with iOS5, I'm no sure I'd like it. I've pirated many things in the past including my OS systems. I decided to buy Windows 7 when it was released and the feeling of being able to download updates or latest programs that require verification are great. It's a warm, fuzzy feeling having everything legit :P

I'm guessing Skype isn't subejct to the same limit?

I think the more people that request it through Apple's feedback system the quicker they'll do something about it.

Moaning on the interwebs might make some feel better but it's unlikely to actually achieve anything.

Nope. I made a 3G video call the other day for the first time and it worked very well.

Originally Skype had the same restriction i.e. Apple enforced it during the approvals process, subsequently to that they have allowed it, yet they still have not removed the FaceTime restriction -- another inconsistency if anyone's keeping count...

I think you possibly confuse JB and piracy; not everyone that JBs wants to pirate, and many of the tweaks are free to market solutions. Yes of course there are apps / mods that are made possible via a JB, that allow you to pirate almost any paid app, for example installous.

True.

Maybe I'll look into it when it's available.

The pirated apps are a bonus but the main benefits are the clever tweaks available through Cydia...
