LCD and Plasma Bargains

Well relative to other non-LED screens, perhaps. The 100Hz version of mine goes for around 10-11k. I couldn't find what I got much cheaper anywhere else.

Fair enough. May I ask why you went with LED edge-lit LCD? What you using it for? You know there are 100Hz LCDs for ±R8,000, superior in picture quality and motion handling?

Soz, just trying to understand the rationale.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but one usually looks at 100Hz screens if they're looking for something to handle motion a lot better (ie: watch a lot of sports?) I don't watch sport at all, and I'm not even planning to get DSTV or anything like that.

I did have a good look through all the equivalent LCD versions (50/100Hz), but I couldn't find one that looked the same as the LED. The pictures on the LCDs just didn't do it for me. I'll be using it for 1080p movies and gaming primarily. I hope you're not going to say that I still made a mistake though :P

100+Hz is mainly bought for sport, you are right. But movies and games also benefit from them, movies appear much smoother.

Did you compare the settings on the TVs? You will often find that the "LEDs" will be running at higher brightness/contrast settings ("torch mode") as there is more profit in them. /tinfoil hat

Tbh I would have gone up to R9,000 and gone with 50" full HD plasma - PS50C550... ;)

But your decision wasn't such a bad one...

Hi, I recently purchased the Samsung 40" LCD LA40C630, 100Hz Series 6. My problem was that I can only fit a 40" in my TV cabinet, I managed to get this model from Makro , last one in stock and that model is end of range, paid R6300. Hifi Corp wanted to sell me the same TV for R10000.
Very happy with Samsung so far, also went the HD PVR route.

Wow, exceptionally good deal. I would do anything it takes to make it fit. :D

ya me too
my dad actually cut his old tv unit so the 40" can fit, lol

Meh, you're stirring up little bits of regret :( You're probably right, they do punt those screens and could well be using different settings on them.

Anyway, I couldn't find any decent plasma screens, so I just scrapped that decision quite early on in my search. Either way, movies appear very smooth on my TV, I have tried to find any downfalls by staring hard for an excessive amount of time at it, but no luck :wtf: I looked at as many comparisons as I could, unfortunately I didn't have my own personal PostmanPot with me to help make my decision easier.

If this benefits anyone at all, Sounds Great Centurion have a special going for the PS42C430 for R4200. They only had 4 left last week friday. Dont know if that is a good price?

Hehe. Well you're happy, and that's what's important. Enjoy!

Epic price. That set beats entry level smaller 40" LCD/LED-LCD which cost R1,000 - R1,500 more at displaying SD and sport, basically anything <720p.

100hz does make movies look really smooth. It sometimes is so smooth that the movie loses it's "movie like quality". Ends up looking like a documentary. Some people like it, some don't. I think it is great for animated movies which are already unreal but normal movies look a bit weird to me on 100hz.

Hi all

Just spoke with a salesman at Game Festival Mall - they will apparently be running a special on the LG 42LE5300 from Thursday - price R6999.00. Not sure if this will apply to other Game stores...

LG 42LE5300 Television

42" Full HD LED LCD TV
- 1920 X 1080 Resolution
- 3,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio
- TruMotion 100Hz
- 2.4ms Response time
- Simplink(HDMI CEC)
- Invisible Speaker
- Infinite Sound
- Clear Voice II
- Ultra Slim Depth & Narrow Bezel

Decent price, but what will those interested be watching? A HD 50" plasma at R6,499 might be a better option!

Possibly, but for those who want to conserve electricity and contribute to the Eskom board's bonuses, LED is the way to go :)

If about R20 a month is worth more to you than a better viewing experience, I guess you're right. :D
